The buttons are a little wiggly and made of soft silicone. Back lighting was a must-have for me, and it isn't available on this model like it is on the OEM model. I didn't realize this before buying it, but it's a good deal at 16 bucks. It doesn't work in the dark, though.
I'd been debating whether or not to get one of these for quite some time, but now that I have one, I'm glad I did. Because noise is an issue in my house, I have to use the mic sparingly during some of my games. Because I occasionally have to send long text messages or several at once, this greatly reduces the amount of time it takes me to compose a message. It's also useful for searching in some of the Xbox's newer apps. The only thing I don't like about it is that it makes playing with my controller uncomfortable, so I have to take it on and off as needed. I also have a hard time getting it to turn on when I turn it on, so I have to fiddle with it quite a bit to get it to work. I can't say it's broken or anything; it just takes a little wiggling to get it to make contact. br>br> I think it's well worth the money if only to keep you from feeling stupid typing messages with your thumbsticks.
One of the pins on the back of the chatpad that slides into the controller was bent when I got it. The chatpad stopped working as a result of this. The pin was held in place with a razor blade while I mated the two together, and the chatpad now works. QUALITY CONTROL IS EXTREMELY WEAK! So, the chatpad now works, but I can't remove it because it takes an eternity to reassemble. Check the pins if your chatpad doesn't work. It looks nice once it's put together, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd go with the Microsoft version because the buttons light up. I suppose what you pay for is what you get.
This is my first Xbox Text Messaging pad, and I have to say that it's fantastic! I was only interested in purchasing the text pad because I already owned a headset and microphone (which was far superior to the one that came with the standard Xbox chat pad and mic). It's sturdy, fits snugly (almost too snugly) on the controller, and doesn't move or shift. To play with it, I'd say it takes a little getting used to. It has a habit of fitting flush against the controller sides. However, it was well worth the money in the end!.
In general, the product accomplishes its goals: provide a convenient way to send messages via Xbox Live; I don't use Messenger, so some of the buttons were a waste of time for me - But for those who do, I'm sure it's useful to be able to quickly access your friends list. I've been playing a lot of multiplayer lately, and my only complaint is that it tricks the controller into thinking you're wearing a headset, which mutes game chatter. I'm not sure if this is standard for chat pads, but I didn't want to have to wear a headset just to be able to send messages quickly. br>br>The four-star rating is due to the jack not being in a convenient location for my controller. 90 of the time I have to turn my controller upside down, align the jack, and then apply pressure to the black part that cradles the battery.
So, after reading the reviews, I decided to order it because everyone seemed to like it better than the original. When I first got it, the first thing I noticed was how cheap it felt and how much lighter it was than the other one. I also tried connecting it to my controller and nothing happened. I tried five different controllers and none of them worked. It is worthwhile to purchase the original. I'd return it, but the effort isn't worth it, so avoid this chat pad altogether.
Pros: br>We no longer have cable because we rarely watch television, but we do use our Xbox to watch Netflix and HuluPlus. It's so much easier to use them now that I have the text pad. It's also a favorite of DH's when he's playing video games. br>br>Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of disadvantages to using this product. br>The buttons are a little small (but I understand why, and it doesn't appear to be an issue), and you don't want to leave it on while paying for a game. I prefer not to use it when I'm holding the controller.
I'm in the middle of getting my money back. br>Out of the box, this product did not work. Perhaps the issue is the connector jack, which appeared to be loose. To no avail, I tried a variety of controllers, turned off my computer, and so on. br>If it worked, it'd be a fantastic chat pad. The layout is simple, the buttons are easy to press, and the design is comfortable. I give it two stars rather than one because of the design. br>Overall, this product is not one I would recommend.
