Questions & Answers

Is this shackle capable of accepting two 3/8" chain link ends with a total width of 3/4"?

Yes, this lock can accommodate up to two 1/2 pewag security chain ends (60mm - 90mm). It'll fit my 12mm (1/2) pewag, peerless 11mm (7/16), and leclede 10mm (3/8) chains (model 160). The pewag 1/2 inch chain fits the gaps the best to keep bolt cutters from grasping the shackle, but any chain will fit well and have enough fill to keep the shackle from being easily attacked. You can see Wayne Winton and BosnianBill's videos on this lock and 1/2 pewag chain on YouTube. In a high-security environment, I would not use this on a single chain link because it exposes too much of the shackle. For something like that (slip chain), you'd want a Granit 37/80 with a shackle guard to keep the shackle from being cut. This isn't a problem if you're only going to use it to secure two links. br>br>I figured I'd respond because there are several incorrect comments on this page. The locks and chains I'm describing are my personal property.

I'm planning to rent a unit from you, and I'm wondering if this is a good option. Public Storage requires a 70mm disc padlock, and they're selling one for $22. It does not sit well with me. ?

Purchase an Abus disc padlock (one of the German-made versions) for this application. They're of good quality and should fit the unit for around the same price as the ones sold by Public Storage. The Public Storage ones, as well as those made by Master, Brinks, and other companies, are simple to choose.

Is this lock compatible with a standard moving truck from Uhaul, Penske, or Budget?

I tried it on a regular box truck and couldn't get the key in because it was locked too tight. With the limited space I had, I had to bend the key's head to fit it into the lock.

Is it possible to use this lock on a u-shaped door? do you have a latch for a 6 x 12 cargo trailer?

I used it to make a U-turn. Yes, if you have a haul trailer of that size.

Make sure you don't throw your money away
3/5

After some motorcycle thieves patrolled my gated apartment complex, I had this padlock for a week. To be sure, I don't live in a bad part of town. I used a Pewag 13mm high-security chain with this lock. Because the thiefs were unable to break my chain, they attempted to break this padlock with bolt cutters (as evidenced by the shackle chips). Unfortunately, they appeared to have no trouble prying the shackle free from the padlock's body. My brand-new 2020 Ninja Supersport has been taken from me. Cheap padlocks should not be used. Get yourself an Abus 83/80 and put your mind at ease.

It is, however, an excellent lock
4/5

I recently purchased a number of locking mechanisms to secure various aspects of our new RV. I have to say that lock shopping is proving to be far more difficult than I had anticipated. After all, the concept is simple enough that I didn't think I needed to research locks as a whole. But, just in case, I figured I'd do some preliminary research. And there I was,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Turns out I changed my mind a lot about what brand, what style, and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, br>br>I purchased this lock because of the style of lock it is and because of a video review. I have a slight case of buyer's remorse after receiving it. Although it feels and appears to be a strong lock, I was unaware of its security rating of 5 out of ten. I continued reading after purchasing the lock and purchased some Abus padlocks for another rv issue. They receive a 7 out of 10 security rating. And for 18 and a change, they're some pretty nice locks. In every way, I was blown away. Abus is clearly a step up from the usual American nonsense, and I'm not sure why Master makes locks at all. I've seen a lot of videos that demonstrate how insignificant they are. In any case, if I could go back in time, I would have chosen the abus version of this Stanley. Overall, I believe it will suffice for my purposes, and it is a significant improvement over where I began. But now I'm wishing I'd taken the bus. The abus locks are by far the best of the ten locks I've purchased so far, with this lock coming in second. The master disk locks are on the 3rd, and the others, which are tri max products, are by far the worst of the lot, even though they are better than what I was planning to buy. There's a lot of unadulterated garbage out there. There's a lot of better stuff out there, but it's still garbage. It's also surprising how difficult it is to find genuine high-quality items. Everything else, with the exception of the Abus locks and this Stanley, is really only good for keeping otherwise honest people honest; if you want good stuff, do your research. And don't forget to take a look at Abus first.

This is a solid lock
5/5

The lock is well-made and has the same durability as locks that cost hundreds of dollars. Because it came with an interchangeable Schlage standard core, I decided to upgrade it to a high-security model. Assa in charge of security. Two Pewag NI-Links will be accommodated by the shackle. 1320 G120 (13mm) chain.

For a good price, a lock good there is a lock for a good price

I just rented a storage area and the lock I bought made me feel better about leaving valuables somewhere away from home; I read quite some reviews and one reviewer said this was one of its tougher locks for it.

Be aware that the dreaded DUD can appear at any time; here's how to deal with it
3/5

Some of these locks are defective right out of the box, as you'll see in a couple of reviews. This was true of the one I received. When the key was turned, the ball bearings inside seized up and refused to move inward, preventing the shackle from returning to the body and causing the lock to become stuck open and unable to close. A faulty actuator could be the source of the problem. br>br>UPDATE: br>br> After some serious digging and tinkering with a new one, I've discovered the source of the problems with these locks: an alignment plate that sits on top of the driver at the back of the cylinder (see image), which engages with the actuator to rotate and allow the ball bearings to retract. This little plate is VERY finicky and will easily slip out of place when re-installing the cylinder. putting the lock together You won't be able to engage the actuator by turning the key, and you won't be able to move those ball bearings if it ever shifts. So, if you're having trouble, try installing it again and again, making sure that the plate is seated in the exact position required to operate the lock. br>br>I suppose I should also mention that this lock is vulnerable to a pry attack because the cuts in the shackle for the ball bearings (which keep the shackle closed) aren't very deep. If you want to defend against this, use chains or a hasp that is thick enough to prevent a bar from getting wedged under the shackle. br>br>Aside from that, this is a great lock for the money, especially since you can upgrade the cylinder if you want to.

How big should the chain links be to fit in the Shackle? The shackle will not lock with two hex 14 mm links
5/5

A 14mm hex link with a 12mm hex will fit into the shackle snugly. Needless to say, two 12mm links will easily fit together. The Shackle protector is about 23mm wide, but the Shackle itself is 1-inch wide when fully extended. At its widest point, it's about 1/4 inch wide (approximately 31. 5mm)is. Due to the shackle protector, the locked usable dimensions are around 23mm wide. Around 27 inches tall. 7mm. That's why the shackle wouldn't close properly no matter how I nested two 14mm links. I believe that if the shackle had been 1mm taller, two 14mm links could have been locked in. The two 14mm links were attempting to catch, but it was not to be. br>This lock appears to be very sturdy. Molybednum shackle with a diameter of 7/16 inch (11mm) and a heavy body. Grade 5 of the ASTM. What's not to like about that? OH. Height is increased by 1 or 2 mm.
