Iron Pipe Size is expressed as "IPS". A 1/2" iron pipe has a larger outside diameter than a 1/2" copper pipe or pvc pipe. If someone wants to use this flange quickly for a smaller pipe, the tabs can be curled with pliers to meet this size. Even though it will have the larger opening in front, it won't need to be stuck to the wall or hang loosely. I understand it may not be what someone is looking for, but if it's hidden behind a toilet, I don't mind it. In all other cases, ensure to purchase 1/2" copper (cu) or whatever is appropriate for your plumbing needs.

Since rigid pipe, aka the 1/2" pipe coming out of the wall, is measured in 1/2" inches, so it makes sense. (Inside diameter) if it were really 1/2", it would never fit over the pipe. These escutcheons are actually a little loose, so giving the tabs a slight squeeze will snug up the fitting on 1/2" iron or brass rigid pipes.

There is no need to worry, you can find the right size. The correct flange will fit snugly on the pipe with very little room to spare.
