Questions & Answers

Could you please suggest a good place to send the 1806B blades to be sharpened?

I send them to Service Grinding in Blaine, Minnesota, and they do an excellent job. I'm sure you could refer them to Terri Thielen at Structural Wood Corporation, and tell her you were referred by Kim. 877- 297- Local 763 (6057) 786- 9652 I hope this has been of assistance.

I understand that this planner runs on 110 volts, but can it handle 240 volts in Australia without destroying it?

Any tool that is operated at an incorrect voltage should be avoided. Thank you,br>btsbr>thanks,br>btsbr>thanks,br>btsbr>thanks,br>btsbr>thanks,br>btsbr>thanks,br>b

Is it possible to plan on plastic with this planer? I'm looking for a tool to remove layers from cutting boards in particular. ?

I really like how this planer shaves wood, and with the carbide-tipped blades, softer plastics could be worked as well. In general, if others have had success shaping plastics with carbide tipped blades, this tool might work for you as well.

What is the procedure for replacing a drive belt on a Makita model 1806B?

Look for a tool that is being sold in your area. Then you should inquire about parts. or simply use the internet to search for Makita. After 9 years, my belts are still in good shape. Attempting to make massive cuts in hard woods may have overstressed and melted your belt. Best wishes to you. Craig, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to you.

It's something I can't imagine not having
4/5

I chose this machine because it was less expensive than the 12" model. I'm constructing a timber frame structure out of 7"x9" white oak timbers for the most part. To cover the entire timber, I must make at least two passes with this unit. Because of the tool's ability to feather its cut, this hasn't been an issue. You can feather the cut to suit your needs by simply raising the tool gradually as you go, rotating the blade height knob, or a combination of both. With this tool, you can make extremely smooth cuts. br>br>On the downside, there is only one thing that irritates me: the length of the power cord. This is excellent. It is, however, made of the stickiest rubber I've ever seen in a power cord, and it will snag on anything near your board, including nubs, protrusions, and splinters, causing the cord to hang up. As you push away, you can even use the end of your board. It creates so much resistance that you have no choice but to stop (leaving a burn mark on your board), remove one hand from the machine, and reach back to force it off. As a result of this problem, my cord is beginning to shred. It was once caught in the blade! They provide a small, screw-mounted wire at the back corner of the tool to hold the cord away from one edge or the other. br>br>Fortunately, it didn't engage the actual wire. br>br>They provide a small, screw-mounted wire at the back corner of the tool to hold the cord away from one edge or the other. You'll have to either place the cord over your shoulder, have someone follow you while holding the cord out of the way, or attach a hook overhead and hang the cord from above, which I found to be mostly ineffective. It irritates me greatly. Also, when walking back to the starting end of a long timber, be careful to keep the machine away from you (or turn it off), as the blade's inside corner edge may cut your pants or shirt. br>br>The tool's base is aluminum. It has a lot of scratches on it, some of which are quite deep. I wish the base could withstand more abuse like this. I don't believe it has any immediate negative effects on performance, but it could in the future. The tool produces wonderful fine shavings (excellent compost material) when used with a sharp blade. The exhaust port for those shavings, on the other hand, has an unusual shape. It's in the shape of a tear drop. I've yet to come across a vacuum receptacle that will fit into such a space. To begin, I attempted to make a small flap to reign-in the flow of the water. It would occasionally clog the opening in the spray, but not always. I'm just going to leave it open for now so it can blow around. br>br>The ergonomics are good, and the weight is right. I didn't find the few flaws to be deal breakers. This tool is (extremely) useful to me. It simplifies and expedites a massive task. I'd buy it again if I had to, but I shouldn't have to because the build quality is excellent. Just take a look at the plywood box it arrives in!.

When you're ready to move on from a toy to the real thing
5/5

I had a lot of trouble with the DeWalt battery. This replaced a powered planer that I returned because it was so bad. It comes in a traditional wooden Japanese carpenter's box and includes all of the necessary accessories, such as a sharpening jig and adjustment tools. Mine had stopped working. No adjustments are required right out of the box (but double-check). This has a lot of power and creates a silky-smooth texture. Even on hardwoods with challenging grain directions and knots, smooth cuts are possible. Large beds make working with large slabs a breeze, and an angle attachment for edges is included. The length of the cord is advantageous. This unit is heavy, so you'll work up a sweat using it, but it glides beautifully once you've finished a large piece. Because there is no chip/dust collection, you should expect to clean up fine shavings up to an inch deep.

The tool is excellent, but it was shipped in a poor condition
5/5

Yesterday, I spent several hours using this tool on long cypress wood beams. The act was flawless. Protect your ears by wearing a pair of earplugs. The tool and accessories are housed in a sturdy wooden box, but the interior blocks were dislodged during shipping. The shipping package, in my opinion, was completely inadequate for such a large item. Fortunately, the tool is resistant to damage. Inside the wooden box, I'm certain the tool was bouncing around loosely - There are no cushioning or retaining inserts at all. The wooden box was not broken, which was fortunate for me. br>br>I'm hoping to track down a set of carbide-tipped blades for this tool.

It can also achieve a better tear-out finish surface than Kanna
5/5

I had the opportunity to use one of these at a friend's house while prepping beams for a timber frame, and I've since ordered one for myself now that I've begun doing larger timber work. Tool that is easy to use! I have a 12" Jointer, but this thing will be used in my shop for wider panel work so that I can use hand planes instead of spending half my life planing paneling to thickness by hand, and it can get a better finish surface in terms of tear out than Kanna on difficult hemlock beams. Robust, well-made, and sharpening isn't too difficult with only two blades. It also includes a cool Japanese crate, indicating that the manufacturer is concerned about the contents.

This tool is well-made and performed above expectations
5/5

I looked around the market and saw a competitor's offer for half the price; knowing that this tool would be used in a commercial setting, I chose Makita. This tool is well-made and performed above expectations. With minimal vibration, this planer produces a lovely finish. I'm confident that the competitor's tool will work, but I'm not sure how long it will last. Makita has never let me down in all the years I've used it.

The Beast is a table-flattening machine that I use
5/5

It's simple to use and does an excellent job of smoothing out large areas. It's large, heavy, and capable of causing significant damage quickly, but in the right hands, it's a stunning weapon. This is a tool that will serve you well for a long time.

It performs as expected
5/5

This tool is ideal for truing up large timbers that are too heavy to pass through a jointer. A plus is the ease of use and intuitive controls. A way to direct the chips would be a nice addition, but it's a minor annoyance. There isn't much else comparable on the market. The tool isn't cheap, but it's worth it if you need to plan.

The wooden case this item came in was blown apart in shipping the first time I bought it, so this is the second time it has shattered
4/5

Inside, the tool shifted, blowing out the corners and displacing the holding blocks. I returned it, fearful that the planer would be harmed. The second purchase was delivered in the same manner as the first, but to a lesser degree. The box was rebuilt by me. The application itself is excellent. If you take a deep bite and the wood is wet at all, your throat can become clogged. It's heavy, but that's exactly what you're looking for.
