Questions & Answers

Why is it described as helical style when it isn't?

A true helical style Grizzly 13 inch planer is available for an additional $100. I despise the fact that Jet is misrepresenting their plane. These HSS inserts will not last as long as true helical style planers and will not produce as smooth a cut.

What voltage does it need to work, and will it work with 220v?

115- Volt, 1- Phase

The inserts are made of what kind of material? Is it possible to rotate them if they become dull?

The cutters are made of two-sided HSS.

Can you tell me where I can get the inserts?

Do an E- Look for a bay. They appeared on the show "Tools-of-the-Tradition." Plu"

This is a good option if you don't have much space
4/5

As is customary, I'll give a quick review and then expand a little further below for those who want more information. br>br>Short and to-the-point - This planer appears to be a good fit for those who don't have a lot of space and want a good solid planer. I've had mine for about two weeks and I must say that I'm very pleased with it. I'm surprised at how much snipe I still get on my boards, but I haven't made any changes yet. The overall quality of the finish produced by this machine is outstanding. I hardly ever have to sand the finished boards when I run wood through it. Detailed Version - br>br>More Information - br>br> br>br>I bought this because my Dewalt was having some problems and was catching/ejecting boards. I attempted but failed to repair it. After considering my options, I came across this small planer and decided to give it a shot because it was made by Jet and came with helical head blades installed right out of the box. In comparison to some of the others (Dewalt), I had also heard that this machine's maintenance should be relatively simple. I didn't want to spend that much, but I decided to go ahead and buy it anyway. For the most part, I'm very pleased with it. br>br>1) It runs quieter than the Dewalt did. It's not quite quiet enough to run without hearing protection, but it's a step in the right direction. 2) The boards have a much nicer finish than those produced by my previous planer. In fact, I've done nothing more than a quick sanding before using the planed boards that came out of this on several occasions. br>br>3) I really like the use of the positive stop system here. It eliminates the need for guesswork when it comes to preparing boards. So, if you're working on a project and know you want your boards to be 3/8" thick, you can easily set the positive stop to that thickness and then work your boards down to it. It's a feature found on most higher-end planers, but not so much on lower-cost models. br>br>4) This unit collects a lot of dust. My unit is connected to a 4" hose that connects to a small wall-mounted dust collection system, and it works flawlessly. There is very little ejected from the front or back. This is a very clean operation. br>br>5) It's a small space. It's almost identical to my previous Dewalt lunchbox planer in terms of size. My mitre station is mounted on a mobile cart that I can easily stow away when not in use. It folds up neatly and has proven to be reliable. br>br>So, to sum it up. If you have a lot of space and money to spend, a larger planer might be the way to go. Jet, like almost every other manufacturer, offers a variety of larger options. This is a good option if you have a smaller shop and need items to be mobile. As I previously stated, I constructed a small mobile cart and attached this unit to it, which works flawlessly in this capacity.

Underperforming and deceiving
3/5

This tool's design and quality are both unsatisfactory to me. The board face had grooves on it right out of the box. I contacted Jet, but their customer service was at best inept; eventually, I spoke with an honest person who advised me to go back to Amazon and try again. That is exactly what I did. Thank you so much, Amazon. The second one had the same issues, with the cutter heads not being helical, which is a gross misrepresentation. They're segmented, with insufficient overlap to cut cleanly across the board's face, and the individual cutters tend to load up and dull quickly. I can only remove about 1/32 of a turn (about 1/8 of a revolution) at a time, making flattening a board extremely difficult. I've only had it for about six months, and the blades are dull and do not plan a smooth surface. This planner is not something I would recommend. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to replace my DeWalt planner. I was under the impression that I was receiving a superior tool. Not so.

Excellent planer that can be carried around
5/5

I've used several planers, but the Jet 13" Helical Planer is by far the best. I was able to begin planning right away after opening the box. I've been using it for about two months and have planed over 40 boards of various lengths with it. The blades are still razor sharp, and the boards are so smooth that I don't have to sand them all that much. It's heavy to move around, but when it comes to planning, it's rock solid. This super planer is a lot of fun to use. Without hesitation, I recommend it.

Knives don't seem to last as long as I had hoped
3/5

The Jet 13" planer does exactly what it should. The quality or hardness of the knife blades is the source of my dissatisfaction. The blades become dull and nicked after milling walnut and maple boards, leaving marks on the boards. I expected to get a lot more use out of the blade before it needed to be changed. In less than 30 minutes, I was able to turn the blades to use a new edge. The machine was able to perform very well once the blades were turned.

Second Opinions   This is a follow-up to my previous Jet Planer review
5/5

Because the knives were sharp and perfectly aligned when the machine was brand new, it could easily plane teak stock on a 15 amp breaker. The rubber feed rollers began to have difficulty pulling the stock through the cutting head after a day or two of use, and the 15 amp fuse began to blow repeatedly. When the knives were sharp, the stock was also pulled in at an angle, so it went straight through. br>br>To fix the problem, I switched to a circuit with a 20 amp breaker and unscrewed and rotated all of the knives 180 degrees with the included hex tool. (The knives can be used on both sides and have two cutting edges. ) ) This restored the machine to its original state, allowing it to plane teak the same way it did when I first opened the box. br>br>I've included a video that shows the six sides of the cutting spindle, as well as how the knives are attached. It took me an hour to unscrew and rotate all of the knives. There are also images of the crank that moves the cutting head up and down, as well as a wheel that allows the thickness of the finished board to be precisely adjusted. br>br>Final thoughts on the Jet Planer. This is a good tool for those who want to use steel knives that aren't of the highest quality. On soft wood, it lasts longer than on teak. However, it's only suitable for small projects in my teak planning work. I can get a complete set of knives for around $180, but installing them takes an hour. Knives made of carbide are unavailable. Carbide blades are available for use with the De Walt planer.

Planer is fantastic
5/5

This, like all of the Jet products I own, is of the highest quality. I bought this to replace a Dewalt DW735 and I'm very happy with it. There were no adjustments required when I set it up. It was absolutely correct.
