There is no way to control the curved base to create a flat surface, so the answer is no. This planer is ideal for shaping wood, log furniture, and other similar items.

I'm not sure how big the radius is, but it never goes to zero; there's always some arc.

It sped through normal board grain and plowed through end grain cuts with consistent pressure time after time. I'm pretty sure I've made at least 35 of them. On a 15"x15" piece of sap wood, I made 40 end grain cuts. This was done a total of eight times! This tool saved me enough time to pay for itself and provided me with a lovely graceful curve. It will take some practice, and you must be willing to turn the foot knob up and down while cutting, as THIS WILL AFFECT THE RADIUS OF YOUR ANGLE CUT. at the tiniest curve possible For my project, the total depth of wood cut was about 21". 15" was end grain, full 21" depth/ht cut in one pass, some short, others full length, as stock needed to be removed for the shape. This tool has exceeded my expectations. I wish carbide blades were a little less expensive! Craig, hello.
We built a log house with oak timbers for siding, and this little planer gave it a hand-hewn look! THIS PLANER IS AMAZING! The money was well spent. In about 5 minutes, I can finish a 16' timber! Because replacing the blades is costly, I purchased the straight blade and ground it down to a curved blade myself. Three sets of blades were used to cut through the entire house's timbers. This is an outstanding tool!.
This isn't a pretty tool with no pretty colors or machined castings, but it's a workhorse nonetheless. It's a little heavy, but it rips through wood and appears to last a long time. It's an old-school Makita tool, made in Japan, that's ugly, functional, and long-lasting.
It is significantly less expensive in the United States than in the European Union. That is why we chose to purchase this item; however, we failed to notice that it operates at 120V, while the EU operates at 220V, necessitating the purchase of a transformer (at least 1500W). It's still less expensive than buying it in the EU.
It's a great tool, but there's one flaw: it doesn't come with any curved knives. It cost me an additional $140 to purchase them separately. For a pair of those, it'll set you back $0. 00.
If you want to sculpt, you'll need a concave planner. This is a fantastic tool. If you're sculpting wood, you'll need a concave planner. a great deal of timber - This is a hard worker. This is a tool that I would strongly recommend.
Yes, it is pricey, but it is a fantastic tool. It takes some practice to master the scooping stroke.
Excellent value for money.
