My 16-footer was fitted with wheels. 42 on a JET stand with no issues. Check to see if the wheels are rated for the lathe's weight and more.
No, I do not believe that is true. Mounting on a bench is a huge undertaking.
The new 1640 models don't rotate at all. That feature was dropped by JET.
For larger bowls, the headstock does not rotate. You must obtain the bed extension and position it on the lower level. Then you can turn your larger bowl by sliding your head stock to the end. Good Luck

I had a Harbor Freight lathe at the time. This Jet lathe is now in my possession. It's the equivalent of upgrading from a 1985 Ford Escort to a brand-new Chevrolet Camaro. br>br>Let's start with the positives:
- DC motor with a power rating of 5 horsepower and a voltage of 120 volts. It's very quiet and smooth.
- From 40 to 3200 rpm, the speed is infinitely variable. I've got it down to 35 rpm, and at 3200, it's quiet enough for me to listen to music on my Dot.
- It can be turned around. The art of reverse sanding is quite lovely.
- Tool rest tighteners that simply work, as well as a heavy, solid construction.
- The tailstock quill travels a good 4 inches, with the increments laser etched on it.
- Outboard turning is possible with a rotating head stock.
- Readout of the revolutions per minute in digital format.
- Spindle lock is a term used to describe a type of locking mechanism Yeah, I'm a big fan of this.
- Indexing. You already know you want it if you're aware of what it is.
- The center pin is not required to use live center. The knockout rod is used to remove it. Also included is a live center for the cone that can be used without it.
- Reversible faceplate with a diameter of three inches.
- Tool holder that is mounted on the side of the leg. It's very handy. br>br>Now for the bad news:
- The faceplate that comes with the kit is only 3 inches in diameter. It's useful, but I'd prefer a 6 inch faceplate.
- Instead of a continuous range from low to high, you can switch between two speed ranges by shifting the drive belt. This isn't nearly as bad as it may appear. The first range is from 40 to 1200 dollars. The second range extends from 100 to 3200. As a result, you'll be on the second range the majority of the time. The access door on the front of the headstock makes moving the belt EXTREMELY simple. Open the door by moving a lever, then moving the belt, lowering the lever, and closing the door. There are no screws or latches on this door.
- This is a HEAVY piece of equipment. The crate weighs 440 pounds when empty, and the assembled weight is 375 pounds. br>br>It would be best if two manly men put it together, but I was able to do it on my own. Yes, I'm macho, but if you follow the instructions, it can be accomplished by one person. br>br>I plan on using this lathe for at least the next 25 years. When that time comes, I'll be ninety years old. This lathe has earned my Woodturning Seal of Approval for the time being.
My new Jet 1640EVS Lathe has exceeded my expectations! The lathe arrived on time (in fact, a day ahead of schedule!). ) and without causing any harm. I haven't spent as much time turning on my new lathe since I reorganized my garage, but I have completed a few smaller projects. This lathe has all of the bells and whistles that any wood turner could want, with the exception that the controls are on the 'right' side of the lathe, rather than the 'left' side, which is the 'out of fire' position, as they were on my previous Jet 1221VS. The lathe is exceptionally well-made, finished, and heavy! The sliding and rotating head stock, which was one of the main reasons I bought this lathe, is fantastic. I was concerned that the rotating head stock would not always'realign' properly, resulting in an unwelcome wobble and potentially hazardous turning conditions. This has never been the case with my lathe, as the headstock/tailstock alignment has always been 'dead on' every time I rotated the headstock back to its normal position. I can't say enough good things about this lathe, as well as Amazon/CPO Outlets/Jet's customer service and quick delivery!.
On the Jet 1640, the headstock no longer rotates; it now only slides. You can always move the headstock to the end of the rail and turn larger bowls from there, but you'll need to invest in a $290 extension attachment. Jet should have kept the rotating feature, in my opinion. br>br>The electronic variable speed feature is extremely useful, as it allows the speed to be reduced to 40rpm, which is ideal for larger or uneven blanks. This feature was the deciding factor in my decision to go with the Jet 1640 over the 1440, which can only go down to 400rpm and does not allow you to fine-tune the speed. br>br>The cast iron has a really bad finish. I would expect it to be flawless if I spent $2,000 on it. If you're looking for something different in this price range, the Laguna REVO and Galaxi DVR are both good options. br>br>It is covered by a 5-year warranty! This is significantly more time than any of the competitors. Another reason I went with Jet instead of the other models was because of this. br>br>Overall, it's a great machine that runs smoothly.
This is a fantastic piece of equipment. I had a 20-year-old delta lathe with a few worn-out components. The parts were more expensive than the lathe itself. I decided to treat myself to a new lathe, and this one exceeds my expectations. The design is extremely well-thought-out, and everything functions flawlessly. Vibration isn't a problem because it's so heavy. The electronic speed control works extremely well. The inverter converts single phase 110 to three phase 220, giving it a wide range of power. I'm excited to get back into the swing of things. br>br>The fact that the machine was made in China was my only disappointment. I expected this to be a US product because Jet is based in Tennessee, but whatever.
This is a well-built lathe. When I retire (which will be soon), I plan to work with wood. This is the most unique piece of gear I've bought for that purpose thus far. I did a lot of research to make sure I got exactly what I wanted and needed, and I'm very happy with it so far. Learning to turn wood once more is a lot of fun for me. It has even piqued the interest of my son and grandson, who have used it to prepare for a few serious projects. It includes two live centers, a small face plate, one tool rest, and a knock-out tool. out rod. I added a chuck, as well as some smaller tool rests and, of course, gouges. It was straightforward and straightforward. It was simple to put together, but the weight proved to be a challenge. I'm not going to put it on wheels, and I'm not sure it needs to be. I eagerly anticipate the day when I will be able to devote my time to turning wood.
In comparison to my previous ShopSmith, this is a very nice setup! If the power source you're using has a GFI breaker, be prepared for electrical problems. Even before the motor starts turning, the machine generates a surge, causing the GFI breaker to trip. I turned on the outlet after rewiring it to a standard non-GFCI outlet. It's starting to sound like a song. With this lovely machine, I'm looking forward to creating fantastic projects.
