There is no reverse switch on this model.

What is the function of the VS control, and where can I find it?

On the left side of the headstock, there's a large knob. The speed is controlled by this. You must make the necessary adjustments while the lathe is running.

Despite the fact that it requires some repairs, I am very pleased

The pin holding the headstock in place appears to have sheared, so it's being repaired at a dealer. Because I couldn't get my blanks round enough, the lathe jumped around a lot, which caused the problem. Despite the issue, I would purchase it again, but with greater caution. Because I've only had the lathe for about three years, I'm hoping that the warranty will cover the repairs, but I'm not holding my breath. This lathe had a lot of wear and tear on it.

The lathe is very sturdy

It's a very solid and well-built lathe. I couldn't wait for it to be delivered to my husband's house. The only problem is that the crate was damaged, so when my husband opened the box, two items were damaged, which bothered me. One was a broken cover sleeve over one of the cords, and the other was a plastic cover plate that should have been protected better before being placed in the box. That was such a letdown! Overall, it's a lovely lathe. It is extremely popular with my husband. He can't wait to put it to use. However, because it is extremely heavy and comes in one piece, it is recommended that you have assistance moving it. If you purchase one, have fun with it!.

The money spent was well spent. I'm only a home hobbyist, but this lathe is fantastic. It's narrow, straight, and quiet. Furthermore, the shipping company was an absolute pleasure to work with.
