PSI CMG3C Mini Grip 4 Jaw Wood Lathe Chuck System (Amazon) is what I use and it works great. I made a few small lidded boxes and a couple of small bowls with a diameter of less than 5". I'm also a newbie!

This is a good lathe to start with if you've never worked with one before or if you've worked with one for a long time. This is a high-quality tool from a high-quality manufacturer. A spindle extension is available if you think you'll want to make some longer spindles. This is the lathe you should purchase.
Very simple to assemble and provides ample power for small projects. But don't take my word for it; as I previously stated, this is my first, and I really enjoy it. My son has been using a lathe for a while and says the quality is excellent.
The adjustable speed appeals to me. It has the ability to successfully complete my projects. It's also lightweight enough to use on a workbench, and it's fairly stable.
So far, I'm really enjoying it.
For the beginner, this is an excellent lathe. You'll be able to make everything from bowls to candlesticks. Excellent value for money.
This is an excellent tool. When it's on, you can really hear and feel the quality. The spindle speed can be easily adjusted on the dial, but the ratios must be manually changed in three steps of different speed ranges. Many drill presses have a design similar to this one. The process of changing the belt position is a little tedious, but it's the only drawback I've had with this lathe. Grizzly also makes a bed extension for this model that allows it to turn much longer pieces (though it has no effect on diameter). The bed extension is a nice addition to the tool that gives it a much larger lathe feel, but if you get it, you should also get a longer tool rest or make one yourself if you're crafty (the tool rest will need a 5/8" shaft if you go this route). Because the rest that comes with the unit is rather short, you'll find yourself moving it a lot more than I'd like. br>br>If you're looking for a bench top lathe, I can guarantee you'll be pleased with this one.
