The shank on the one I recently received is 5/16". They've come in 1/4" and 1/2" shanks for me. I believe it is entirely dependent on the vendor's request. I've never had a problem with any of the Freud Forstner bits, and they're very durable.
The best bets in terms of size are 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch, but I'd go with the Metric Forstner bits. The number six can be utilized. The 5mm and the 13mm are two different sizes of the same thing. Even so, you won't be able to get the ideal size for the 6. 66mm. I hope this information is useful.

I haven't seen any worse pieces of garbage in a long time, and I didn't realize how bad they were until I purchased and used my first Freud forstner bit. Both at night and during the day! The Freud bit left a lovely, clean hole (in plywood, no less), with no tears. I was astounded by the quality difference. Since then, I've bought a few more Freud items and am pleased with them all.
Drilling pips in yard dice that we make and sell was a breeze with this drill bit. I drilled over 12,600 holes with this bit after using it for over 100 sets of six dice. The bit works best when used on a drill press in a slow, steady motion, as it does with most things.

Instead, go for the Fisch. For a short time, this bit was razor-sharp. I was disappointed because I expected it to last at least as long as a regular Forstner bit before it needed to be sharpened, but it only lasted a couple of weeks of moderate use.
