This tailstock is what I use for all of my wood turnings when I need support at the back end of the workpiece. In my experience, I have not yet seen any distinctive marks on the tail stock after hitting it several times with carbide tips to flatten the back of a workpiece. When it comes to digging into the work piece and holding it steady, it works really well. The only problem with this is that if you are not careful, you can easily split whatever you work.
I have about 25 hours on it now, so we will see how long its bearings last. It's a comically large machine, but it spins well.
