Approximately 1981 was the year where a South Bend Heavy 10 was produced. It was time to clean it all up and replace the wicks. I had to replace a couple of gears, as well. My experience according to the book is very detailed as to the step-by-step instructions, which made it easy to follow and help me to gain a better understanding of how the machine was made and maintained. If you are unsure whether you can service the lathe yourself, it is extremely recommended that you get the complete package with the book. You will not regret it.
As I read the reviews, I realized that others received books with their orders. As luck would have it, I never expected anything other than what I saw. After receiving the product, I opened it to my surprise to find two books along with it. South Bend offered me the book as a free download on my lathe and what I received was more of a parts list to purchase, and that was not worth the money I paid. After a quick glance at the book I received with my order, I find it to be exactly what I would expect from South Bend and the How to Run a Lathe book I had got on eBay for what I paid, I found the kit to be a lot more valuable than I expected. My rating is high just because it is the best deal I have had in an exceptionally long time. Thanks to you guys for the extras.
There is nothing bad to say about the rebuild kit. Simply looking at the instruction book alone is worth the price of the package. The wicks, wipers, and seals are very well cut and seem to be made from well-quality made this a 5 star review was that they threw in a free copy of South Bend's How To Run A Lathe guide. Getting a surprise package from you made my day. It was really good to open the box and find a few extras.
It seemed easier to buy the kit than to figure out what kinds of felt I needed and to buy them separately, but I'm very glad I bought it because the book has some very important pointers where I would have gotten into trouble if I hadn't seen those. There are, of course, some things that don't match my lathe in the book- There have been variations in the design over the years, and I think my tool has evolved a bit over time, but this book is still indispensable.
