Questions & Answers

How close can you punch the hole to the metal's edge?

This tool is available in two different versions. One hole punches 3/16" holes, while the other punches 5/16" holes. Because I own both, I can answer both questions. The 3/16" hole punch creates a hole 1/8" from the edge of the unit. The 5/16" hole punch creates a hole that is 1/16" from the edge. I hope this has been of assistance to you. My tools have provided me with a great deal of satisfaction.

What is the recommended capacity of a compressor in gallons?

It can be powered by almost any compressor. If you'll be crimping long panels a lot, you'll want something with a bigger tank, but it'll still run on a pancake compressor. On the small patch panels I've used it on, it never got to the point where the compressor kicked in, even though I have a 30 gallon tank on my home shop compressor.

Is it possible to use this item for? 125" 3003h14 aluminum (22ksi tensile, 11% elongation)?

No, jaws are only a few millimeters wide. It's 110 inches apart, and there's a "kink" in the middle that forms the bend, so it's even thinner there; I couldn't measure it.

What's the best way to turn your head? I haven't been able to figure it out because there is nothing in the instructions. ?

You should be able to twist the head by hand with the air hose unhooked for safety. It will be a little difficult to turn, but it should be possible.

I offered to send photos, which I did, and they expressed interest in having me send it to them at my expense, but they basically said they couldn't justify it

Please do not purchase this brand. I purchased this and placed it in my store. Unfortunately, I didn't get to use it for another year. I own and operate a high-end restoration business. For the first and only time. . . The very first time I pulled the trigger to install an offset flange on a brand new piece of Goodmark metal quarter panel, the head broke off. It didn't even have enough force to scratch any of the head's paint. So. Unfortunately, it was clearly a casting flaw, but it wasn't a major issue. Things take place. The purchase information was looked up by our office manager. Because it had been over a year since I had purchased it through Amazon, they were unable to assist. But it was when I contacted the manufacturer to see what could be done that I was taken aback. I sent them photos and tried my hardest to be understanding. They claimed that it didn't matter if it was the first time the box or tool were used. If it was less than a year old, they would only offer to try to repair it. I offered to send photos, which I did, and they expressed interest in having me send it to them at my expense, but they basically said they couldn't justify it. I was taken aback by the reaction. I employ eight people, all of whom invest in high-quality tools for our work. We won't be purchasing any more Astro equipment in the future. We simply do not have the time to take any chances with the quality of our work.

The Bad: The cost of living is rising every day

What the heck is going on with Amazon's price? It was forty dollars the first time I checked! Anyway, I bought a less expensive flanger to save money for this one. The other flanger had a bad flange and had completely forgotten about punching holes. The ONYX did a great job flanging right out of the box, and the hole punched easily. I didn't need this tool to punch holes. I simply tried it. I'm only giving it three stars because of the high price and the fact that I haven't completed the other side of the auto panel yet to know if it will continue to function properly. I hope this is clear. I'm not in the mood to rewrite the review.

It has been returned

First and foremost, Amazon's shipping was fantastic. However, the box had been opened when I got my tool. It didn't work after I oiled it. I persevered, and eventually it began to function. Then I tried punching a hole in some 18 gauge sheet metal, and it took 20 trigger presses to get it to do so. Even making a flange is difficult. I have a Quincey shop compressor, so there will never be a shortage of air. I was disappointed because I was expecting the tool to complete a panel replacement on a project; I'll have to look for a better tool.

This is an absolute must-have for any restoration project! For plug welding, I had to punch approximately 63,944,593,289 holes in the replacement roof panel for my Challenger
5/5

Without this tool, I'm not sure I would have made it. There is no panel warpage and the holes are clean and precise. In any case, it wasn't done on purpose. I used the wrong side of it once by accident and can attest that it makes a damn fine flange as well. Oops. br>br>I adore it so much that once the restoration project is completed, I may take it on a romantic getaway.

Spend a few dollars more for a better tool or save some money by buying something cheaper
3/5

This was purchased to aid in the replacement of body panels on a project vehicle. I used it on one panel and it flanged and punched holes perfectly; the unit impressed me at first. It's a big machine that runs like a charm. I figured I'd get a lot of use out of a tool that I felt justified its higher price (rather than a similar Harbor Freight tool that costs $30 less). However. I put the tool away after making a flange for ONE lower quarter panel and continued around the car to the second panel. On the second panel, the tool's upper anvil snapped clean off before I could make more than 2" of flange. ) There should be no undue stress, abnormal use, or unusual angles. I'm just walking along a 20" straight edge made of 18 gauge metal. Naturally, the deadline for returning the tool to Amazon has passed, but as a weekend hobbyist, it's easy to overlook that deadline because the use of a tool like this is irregular. I'm contacting the manufacturer to see if they can assist, but I'm currently stuck on a project due to a broken tool. It's a real drag. So, if you're looking for a better tool than Harbor Freight, I wouldn't recommend this unit and would advise you to look elsewhere.

It accomplishes the task at hand
5/5

I haven't given the tool a thorough test yet, but it performed as expected when used on old auto body metal that was slightly thicker and stronger than what you can buy today from a foreign country. The flanges were flat, and the edges of the holes were smooth.

Strongly suggested! The high quality of this tool astounded and impressed me
5/5

I didn't have high expectations for the price; However, it's excellent. 16 ga steel is easily punched and flanged with this machine. It doesn't strain at all, makes almost no noise, and the slugs don't fly all over the place. It was also much more useful than I had anticipated.

It's pointless
3/5

I've returned it to you. Punches holes that are too small and too close to the edge for plug welding at low power. The crimping side isn't nearly as effective as it should be.
