Questions & Answers

It has a swivel head, so can you use it for oversized items?

For working on pieces with an oversized size, the head can be rotated 180 degrees. What I wish is that people wouldn't answer these questions if they didn't know what they were talking about. According to Geoff, the instructions can be found on page 15 of the Powermatic manual, which can be downloaded from the company's website.

Can you tell me what chisels come with the machine?

This set of 4 chisels comes with 1/8"*1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" chisels

Can you tell me the minimum table size required for this (width and depth)?

The one I have is on a 20 x 20 inch table with wheels, so I can always move it to where I need to be. I really like how it works.

Are there any chisels or bits included with this mortiser, and how long is the return period?

In the past year, I bought four Power Matic super-speed motors Identify the sharp bits of information. We have 1/8, 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2 to choose from. While I had a set of Delta mortising bits, I decided to purchase a Power Matic instead The Delta buttons never seemed to work properly for me. To store the bits and extend the work surface, I made a mortiser stand and cabinet on wheels. If you are able to do that, I highly recommend it.

It makes no sense to finish the fence and the table this way
3/5

The one I have was bought from Amazon in March As soon as it arrived, I was ecstatic. It was disappointing to remove the protective coating on the fence and table, which was difficult. During the milling process, the fence and table surface had a It made sense to me that it would help hold the This made it extremely difficult to remove the oils or whatever they used to prevent rust from forming while the box was in storage. The wood did not leave stains on it, so I finally got it to work. He started using it and trying it out. I must say it was a bit of a pain in the rear! If you did not back off the clamps far enough, even a small piece of wood could not be slid over. it became apparent that I had cleaned it so well that it needed to be replaced. Rust started to form in the rough finish of the table and fence. Having to deal with that was another In the end, I decided to smooth the fence and table. The wood would slide easier, and I wouldn't have to worry about my fence and table rusting. Having read some reviews online, I have come to the conclusion that my machine must not have gone through the complete finishing process when it was made. It was never mentioned that they worked on their table or fence other than maybe using steel wool or light emery cloth to clean them. The pictures here seem to support that. It is possible to see some milling marks on the fence, but not on The ones on my hands were quite visible and quite rough. To make things even more challenging, we used Roloc discs and an air grinder to grind the surface semi-smooth. My preference was for this copy over the Delta or other copies from abroad. I suppose I should have sent it back if I had looked Although I have not completely smoothed out the table and fence, I am still considering it. Taking some time to get the Roloc discs right. You might even want to use As I use them, I have seen good results with the CMT cutters I bought. Despite that, I still feel like I bought a bad tool when I actually try to use it. However, the light use has lasted for ten years. The system is still up and running. Several of the areas are difficult to clean due to rust. To access those spots, the entire structure would need to be disassembled. As I live in the midwest, I only have a propane heater or wood stove in the shop while I am working.

The information was inaccurate beyond belief
3/5

A Powermatic product is well known for its high quality, heavy-duty construction This machine is a heavy duty machine. Despite spending $600, plus bits/chisels, I did not expect 1) the head to wobble when I lowered it to my work piece, 2) the clamp to wobble as I moved it forward or backward, and 3) the work piece to slide out from underneath Despite my efforts so far, I haven't managed to make a decent mortise As a result of the wobbling, I end up with mortises that gradually tilt to the left as they are cut By looking at each cut, you can see how the bit made the steps. Even if I try to keep it as level as possible, there are too many variables in the shifting and moving around, and those variables have variables as well, so no one wobbles the same, no two movements are the same, and I can't calibrate It is not even at 160 degrees, and the fence is at an angle to the table That's what it's about 178, and you can imagine how much of a difference that makes. I cannot adjust it, at least not by myself. I'm disappointed to have to work at the mortises with a chisel afterward to try to salvage them, or repeat my passes up and down the mortise and then change my plans for the I wouldn't necessarily call it waste of money, but it was a bit costly Despite its good cutting capacity, it only cuts straight if it is true to its purpose. Guess I'll have to go back to my router, and I'm not entirely sure what to do about this 100- page file A piece of iron weighing one pound.

Are there any more details I should mention? It is a matter of what you get for what you pay. I was impressed at how well packaged it was and how well it worked out of the box. One thing about the swing is that it's kind of shallow to me. There is a PM 701 riser block available that will add a few inches to the height. There is a disadvantage to the riser block in that the fence adjuster knob will no longer work. Even so, I am still happy, because I am going to start a project soon and I need to use a tool that provides greater depth. In an effort to be creative, I would have to rip the piece I needed the mortises on, and then glue it As a result of the riser block, the project will be reduced to a one-piece project. The holddown will no longer reach the pieces that are taller than what the machine is able to handle. It is possible that I will need to make something or possibly use It will take time to find out. As long as I cannot afford a stand-alone machine, this will work well for me until a stand-alone machine is available.

Benchtop mortiser made of heavy gauge steel
5/5

A substantial amount of work has gone into this mortiser in hardwood (as a result of chisels from 1/4" to 1"). Taking it all on with ease is this 3/4 horsepower machine. With the 1" chisel, however, I had to go a little slower, since 1" in hardwood will surely slow things down. Some of the reviews on the machine mentioned gear problems, so I was a little worried when I bought it. Although I don't know whether Powermatic improved this machine, there are no gear problems with mine. This machine has worked fine since the day it was bought. As far as I am concerned, this is the best benchtop mortiser currently on the market. This mortizer is perfect for 99% of my projects which require 1/4" to 3/4" chisels. If I needed to use 1" chisels often, I probably would get a heavy duty machine, but not for 99% of my projects.
