When I used to cut Formica sheets, I went right through them.
Since this bit is being used against mesquite, I should acknowledge that I am not reviewing the bit and that I am only reviewing it. I'll still use it on the router table to take tiny bites off of smaller pieces that can use its fence as a guide, but for template work I will not use it.
There is only one option to avoid the bit being delicate, and that is to reduce the size of the shank where it goes through the bearing. The bit will last a long time if used properly. I use a 1/2" or 3/8" bit to pass through most of the materials and then use this bit to sharpen the corners. The routing of pickup holes is a great tool for guitar builders.
Most don't even want to sell it due to its delicate nature. Having some fairly intricate inlay work to do, I picked this one So long as you keep your expectations in check, go slow, and with shallow passes, it works just fine. It's a thumbs up from me!.
Use this bit properly and you will get fantastic results. In my opinion, it takes great care to cut more than a few millimeters of depth at once or to cut it too quickly. Then, taking shallow cuts and working slowly towards the pattern, I am able to make the recessed areas for the covered truss rods. I used it on wood and it left a shiny surface on the wood because it was so clean and thorough. Cutting maple, mahogany, and cherry was no problem for this saw.
As the only router bit that duplicates patterns of 1/4" diameter without need for bushings and other accessories, it allows the routing to directly follow the contours The only 1/4 inch item of its kind.
It is best not to remove too much material in one pass, or your bit may break.
Using the old game surface as a template, this bit worked perfectly when creating a new rod hockey playing surface. As you can see, I am very pleased with the results.
