The shaft measures 1/2 inch in diameter. It is hard to find a quality router bit other than Whiteside. The quality of this product is excellent.

In any case, the results appear to be worth the money. As part of a starter set of bits, I had been routining juice grooves with a cheap core box bit. There was a lot of burn that had to be sanded out in every groove. Based on YouTuber recommendations, I decided to see if Whiteside bits worked for me. I just routed my first groove with the new bit, and there are no burn marks at all.
It seems to be working really well, with the edge still holding strong.
