During a different project, the bit did a great job on a piece of hardwood with an For those who are bored (sic), it is a great choice.
The edges leave a smooth finish, so there's no need to sand with this bit just go slow. I run it at 600 rpm and it works fine.
These "cups" were made from red oak and were 1 1/4" deep using a Wen table top drill press with a 1/3 hp and 10 speed motor. There are 48 of these, and the Amana is still relatively sharp and working. It took a while to drill through the wood (about ten minutes each) due to the low power drill and hard wood but the results were consistent and high quality.
This drill bit looks like it would work well, but it seems to scrape the surface rather than cut cleanly. The reason probably has to do with the fact that it is made in China.
As a result, I reduced my expectations, knowing that a Forstner bit with a radius of 3" exceeds the design parameters. Although, with a proper rotation speed and a reasonable amount of pressure, the bit performs in an acceptable manner. It is possible for hardwoods to burn a little When voids formed in pine and poplar, they were clean and perfectly.
