Questions & Answers

What is the clamping force produced by this?

I can't say for sure without using a force gauge, but I'm confident it's in the 1000-pound range. I've used it to secure 8/4 red oak boards measuring 55" x 14" for hand planing, and it works flawlessly.

My vice has an asymmetrical bench side. The bottom is about a sixteenth of an inch thicker than the top. Work will not be held square to the bench. Are there any suggestions?

I'm not sure I understand your query. If your vise isn't square to your bench, you'll need to shim it to get it in the right position.

What is the device's size?

The following are the approximate dimensions of this vice: The width of the jaw is 7 inches. six feet tall 5 inches; With the jaws closed, the depth is 14 inches. The jaws can open up to 7 inches wide. 7/8 of an inch The vise weighs 22 pounds in shipping.

When it comes to vises, where do they come from?

I don't know. There was nothing on the vise, but the box said "China" if my memory serves me correctly. Everything is nowadays, so it's likely that you did.

I'm a professional woodworker, and I bought this vise for my second workbench
4/5

It's a high-quality vise with a few minor flaws. I already have two Wilton vises with quick release features that are 35 years old and still work fine. This is, as far as I can tell, a reissue of Record No. It arrived undamaged from Amazon; the exterior box could have used a little more padding, but that's okay. The action is fluid, and the materials used are generally of high quality. The quick-release mechanism is simple to use, and the guide rods move without binding or friction. Everything is heavy duty and should last a lifetime. br>I gave it one star because of the following flaws (from the perspective of a woodworker): br>1) Chatter marks from machining have pitted the Lead Screw (see closeup photo). This is most likely caused by milling vibration as well as the use of a dull cutting tool edge. 2) The Lead Screw is not of Acme Thread quality (see photo of small section of an Acme Thread) like my old Wilton vises, which wear out slowly. However, because the pitting has no effect on the screw's smooth movement, I believe it will last a long time. br>3) The movable end stop for your wood item being worked on does not recess all the way into the moving face plate, preventing you from laying a board flush on the bench top and over the vise; I had to hacksaw it flush, about 1/4 inch removed. br>4) The face plates are designed to protrude about 2. 25 inches above the bench top. Because the distance between the underside of the bench and the top of the mount casting is 0 inches, you'll need to use a thick spacer block. My spacer weighed in at around one pound. My top is 75 millimeters thick. The piece being held never lays flush on the bench top, which I believe was designed by a metalworker rather than a woodworker. br>br>I looked at a lot of vises and found that the majority of them were either flimsy or cheap. I even turned down Wilton, whose vises have significantly degraded since I purchased them decades ago. The worst offenders were the woodworking stores, which sold low-cost hobbyist items that would be obsolete in a year or two. They ought to feel embarrassed. Overall, this is one of the best vises in this price range for the 10" size, and it will hold up well in a busy woodshop bench. Because the vise is difficult to see in the sales ad photos, I've included several.

"Toe-to-Toe" is a term that has become overused
3/5

In" - Definitely not the same as the old Record Vice. Update to the previous update- I changed "toe-toe" to "toe-toe" in the sentence. By planning the offending side of my liner, I was able to "in" The vise is fine now that I've had a chance to use it; all I hope is that it lasts as long as my Record 52- 1/2. br>Recently updated- I installed the vise and the toe-hold after securing the plate (see below). Almost a quarter of an inch. Yes, it was more than 3/16" thick in less than four inches. Take a look at the following images. br>Original post-Flimsy, cheap metal of poor quality. I missed the return window because I was working on a workbench for this vice and was running late. When I went to put it together today, I noticed that the plate in the picture was bent as I was wiping away the shipping oil. Because the box was undamaged, it had to have come straight from the factory. I have an old Record vice as well, and the same plate is twice as thick on that one (no way it will bend). The guide rails are loose, able to move around, and could come completely out, as you can see in the pictures. br>Taking a look at the photos- The plate should be level with the tri-fold and straight across. It's square, but it's offset from the retaining washer. br>br>I would have given it a 4-star rating if they had used a better piece of metal. a rating of five stars They introduced a major structural flaw by attempting to save only five cents. At $144. They could (and should) add a slightly thicker plate for an additional 00. br>br>To the producer: br>br> If you're going to copy a classic, at the very least make sure the basic structural elements are replicated so that it works properly. There's a reason why things are the way they are. There was a reason why they didn't cut corners on some things-- You should not do so, either.

This is a fantastic addition to my store
5/5

This vice appeals to me because it is flawless in every way. Without it, I'm not sure how I would have survived. I spent a month researching vices! I was prepared to part with $300. Looking at Paul Sellers and his vice, however, it reminds me of the old Records. It didn't let me down, to say the least. Because there were none in the box, you'll have to download the instructions to install it, but it's fairly simple.

The quality is very poor - Get ready to put in some effort! I bought this vise after researching several competing models and brands, and I have to say that the overall quality is disappointing
3/5

The castings appear to be in good condition, and the rods appear to be parallel from what I can see. The screw, on the other hand, is extremely rough and poorly machined. This thread was cut by someone who either didn't know what they were doing or hadn't changed their cutting tool in six months. The threads (why aren't they Acme threads?) are visible in the photo. Before being used, they must be filed and stoned. br>br>Also, the dog in the front jaw is nothing more than a piece of soft steel stock that hasn't even been machined to fit - It's just a sawed-off piece of bar stock with a sloppy set screw tapped into it. I teach machining at a Big Ten university, and any student who submitted work like this would receive a failing grade. I suppose I can make this thing work, but for the price, I had high expectations.

Excellent value for money and a high-quality tool
5/5

So far, everything has gone well. Over the last two weeks, I've used it for remodeling as well as a few woodworking projects. It's extremely stable and has held up well over time. br>br>It arrived promptly in its original packaging, bagged and boxed. It was delivered to you ready to use. greased and oiled thoroughly It did require some cleaning, but that was to be expected. If I had any criticisms, it would be that it did not come with any mounting instructions or options. It obviously depends on the bench on which it will be installed, but some suggested mounting positions would be helpful. br>br>Excellent value for a high-quality tool.
