Questions & Answers
Character height is measured by the mark left behind in the material being indented, according to the manufacturer PRYOR MARKING TECHNOLOGY. That is the indented distance between the bottom and top of the character's sharp, cutting edge face. The bevel leading up to the character's cutting edge face is not included in this figure. Set TIFH015 has a character size of one. 5mm is equivalent to 1/16" in imperial terms. br>br>Now comes the tricky part: the harder the holder is struck with a hammer, the deeper the characters can be pressed into the material being marked. You could distort the material being marked or push the characters deeper into the holder by striking it hard, especially if the material is soft or thin. This is caused by driving the bevel beneath the leading sharp face deep into the material, and it is considered over-engineering. Characters that stand out Measure the mark left behind in the material being indented rather than the steel type character from the set when measuring. br>br>Using the type set is a skill that can be learned quickly. This is similar to learning how to use any new tool with which you are unfamiliar. If you strike the mark too lightly, you won't be able to read it. If you strike too hard, you'll end up with an overabundance of strikes. Strike will bury the characters too deeply, potentially resulting in a larger-than-desired character as well as deformation of the material being marked. Practice on a scrap piece of material with the indent you want to mark in its entirety. More force will be required when working with harder materials, such as steel versus aluminum, and when marking multiple characters at once. With practice, you'll be able to strike the right balance for a readable indent without burying the characters too far. br>br>The set of characters is intended to leave a legible mark in materials with a Rockwell hardness of 37C or higher. This is comparable to the hardness of oil-hardened or water-hardened tool steel. To avoid overheating softer materials such as aluminum, brass, or mild steel, use a lighter force.
