Selected User Reviews For Wheeler Engineering Roll Pin Starter Punch Set
I needed these to help me insert spiral roll pins without bending or damaging them, and the reviews sounded promising, so I decided to give them a shot. br>br>As soon as I opened them, I noticed some of them had brown sand-like debris in them, then I noticed another one had what appeared to be water filling the hole, and when I removed it, there were clearly greasy finger prints on it. br>br>I'm not sure if I got a used set or if they were damaged during production or shipped open, but they were filthy. I'm sure they'll work fine, and I did spend 15 minutes cleaning the crap out of the holes, but I'd expect a brand new tool set to be free of dirt and liquid, which is why I only gave it two stars. br>br>I noticed another reviewer had a similar problem with theirs, which leads me to believe there is a problem with their quality control. br>br>Take a look at the photos to see how they looked when they arrived and how much crud I was able to get out of them. I could see some leftover production residue, but not to this extent.
I once attempted to assemble a rifle with the roll pins held in place by needle nose pliers. That was a complete disaster. This roll pin punch set made things a million times easier, and I didn't have to scratch the rilfe this time. I'm tempted to become a full-time gunsmith after seeing these tools. HAHA. That will never happen, but these tools will make your life a lot easier, and your gun will look like it was assembled by a pro.
These were purchased to build some ARs, and they worked almost flawlessly except for the roll pin for the gas block, which wouldn't release when I inserted it into the gas block and would simply pull it out! When I tried to remove the roll pin from the tool, the pliers jammed up the end and I was unable to remove the roll pin; I had to purchase a new 1/16" starter. Other than that, everything has gone swimmingly!.
I do a small amount of home gunsmithing, but it's growing, and I've been wanting a set like this for a while, ever since I started the pin for my adjustable gas block. The right equipment makes the job a lot easier. My roll pin punch set is another favorite of mine. So far, I've collected three sets of punches as well as some spares. I believe I am capable of handling jobs that I would not have attempted if I did not have the necessary tools.
I had no idea these punches existed until I saw them in action on TV. Video of a line repair. My blunt head punches would always slip and jump off the pin, not to mention the hammer head whacking into my fingertips, so I had a hard time starting Roll Pins. These issues are no longer an issue with the Roll Pin Starter Punches. The roll pin's end fits snugly into the Starter Punch, securely securing the pin. For the price, they are well made and come with a nice apron. I'd suggest it.
On a forklift, I used these to swap out the mast chains. Roll pins secure the anchor pin perpendicular on both sides; keeping the roll pin lined up with the anchor pin hole was difficult and painful in the past. These appear to be designed for standard roll pin sizes, but the metric pins I used worked fine.
I gave it three stars because the description says it can be used for gunsmithing, but it doesn't come with a small enough punch for some gunsmithing tasks. They appeared to be of good quality, especially for the price, but I needed a smaller punch set, so I returned them.
I'm not sure if it's the roll pins or the punches that are too small, but the quality is generally good. I had this happen on two different sizes, and one of them drove the pin so far into the starter punch instead of the part that I had to remove it with a wrench vise and tourch. be ware.
