I don't have them in front of me to measure, but it's probably a quarter inch or less. Keep in mind that these are "starter punches," which are used to move the pin from its "set" while keeping your hand close to the work. Once the pin is free to move, you'll need a longer punch to remove it. These punches will prevent many bent and broken long punches from having trouble starting a pin that has taken a "set."
Yes, they're kept in a soft plastic bag.
The roll pin is held in place by an insert tip.

You might be wondering why you need two punch sets, one with shorter shafts and the other with longer shafts. You'll understand why if you've ever tried to start a difficult roll pin with a longer shaft 1/16 punch only to have the punch shaft bend or break. Start with the shorter (and thus stronger) shaft and work your way up to the longer shaft. Grace tools are of excellent quality and are manufactured in the United States, which I appreciate. To avoid collapsing a roll pin end, you'll need punches designed for gunsmithing work. Don't even consider purchasing punches from a big-box hardware store. This, as well as the longer shaft sets, are available for purchase. Either now or later, you will do it.
It's a brilliant idea to keep your normal length, smallest sized pin punches from bending and breaking. The smallest two sizes will always be susceptible to this problem, regardless of how good the quality is. Physics is, after all, physics. The problem is alleviated by shortening the punch length. Sure, it's an extra tool in your toolbox, but it's well worth the extra effort to use these starter punches first, especially when working with the tiniest pins or roll springs. Grace USA also produces a 7-piece set that goes well together. They also offer a regular length piece set, and their products are guaranteed for life regardless of how they are broken. When I requested a replacement 1/16th punch from the regular length set, they didn't even inquire about how it had broken. My address was taken, and the replacement arrived in my mailbox three days later. This set, as well as the full length set, have excellent customer service. Starrett punches are also of high quality, and I have a few of them.
For gunsmithing, this is an excellent product. However, I would also recommend using this set with a standard length punch set. It's possible that you won't be able to get the depth you require with these on some occasions. If you're trying to remove the bolt catch retaining pin from an AR15, one example is driving it out. I'd still start with this punch and finish with a regular punch for the final push. The good news is that this set will wonderfully do 95% of what you will need to do on an AR and a single cheap standard length punch can do the rest. I This book comes highly recommended.
The Grace SHORT Roll Pin Punch Set is made to professional standards and is of high quality. If properly used, they can last a lifetime. For firearms maintenance and repair, this is a must-have roll pin punch set. I work as a part-time gunsmith and find that having a short "starter" is critical to producing high-quality results. When removing a roll pin, always start with the short punch because it puts your hand closer to the work and gives you more control over the firearm. After you've started driving the pin out, finish it off with your long punch. When installing a pin, the short punch is also a better option for completing the job. This is a must-have set for anyone who builds, armors, or maintains AR rifles.
Purchase this set and put an end to your worries! I've put together three ARs with this set, and they've all worked flawlessly. I've only used long punches to remove existing roll pins that wouldn't go all the way through. Installing roll pins is all you'll need, believe me.
This allows you to move the pin. This is the set that no one tells you you require. After you've gotten the roll pin moving with this set of punches, you can move on to the longer punch. If you start with the longer punches, they will bend or break. To move the pin, you'll need to do the following:br> Begin with the short punch and work your way up to the longer set.
These punches are extremely durable, precisely sized, and beautifully finished. Because of the short shanks, they and the pin are easy to hold in tight spaces. I can't imagine ever breaking one, short of losing it.
The 1/16 punch performed flawlessly, with no bending or binding. The rounded head of the punch kept the punch centered on the pin, allowing me to finish the job with confidence. Because the 1/16 is the weakest, I anticipate that the larger ones will perform at least as well.
