The program seems to be working well I primarily use this punch for removing hub races from tractors as well as semitrailers and floats It has so far been a pleasure working with Mayhew tools, and I appreciate the price compared to trying to purchase them on a tool truck. Not a single complaint from me. At the end of the day, you should use the right tool for the job, and this one will not disappoint you.
A slanted edge was what I expected to see on this tool. I did not receive one like that. As you can see, the bearing race on the one I received has an oval edge that seems to work if you can get to the back. In addition, you may need to start from the front if the race is close. There is very little value in using this tool. Although it seems to take a beating well and was helpful in removing a blind race, there's no reason to be concerned. My only wish is that there was an angled edge to the punch.
The tool fits snugly against the side of the hub and has extra surface area on the lip of the race due to the unique oval shape of its This 14-day period I hammered it with the right length of one inch. There has never been a more convenient way to remove races from the hub. This steel tool doesn't create metal shavings like a brass drift punch, nor does it make me sneeze when I use it. It would be disastrous if a metal shaving got into a bearing.
My job is to punch out races and I used to punch them out with a big punch. It was a pain in the ass and However, one of my colleagues My colleague let me borrow the same punch (the best I have ever seen) and I would do it again in a heartbeat. A mechanic should have this just in case they are constantly working on wheel ends.
Tap out bearing races with ease using this tool. With its long length and oval face, this punch can clear a hub with ease. It also has more grip on the race than would a circular punch. It also helps if there is a slight taper. Better momentum can be gained by using a small sledge. Because I did not possess a seal extractor for tapping out the inner bearing, I also used it to tap out the inner bearing and seal. Pros and cons? It's still not quite as hard as the race, even though it is hardened steel. There is still some deformation to the punch face, especially if it slips off the race during the strike. You will probably have to dress it periodically to ensure the edge remains sharp.
The bearing races can be punched out very easily. I've been racing diesel trucks in big races for a while, so it will eventually need to be smoothed out. It is a great value for the price. I would buy it again.
This was the first time I had to remove a bearing race with interference fit. Very minor mushrooming of the striking head and minimal damage to the housing, which I had to reuse after I hit it pretty hard.
For a fraction of the price, you can also get the same one you would find on a tool truck. Mayhew makes great tools that can withstand abusive use.
