What country did they make their products in?

Great Star has been producing these in China for several years after Jorgenson went out of business. I have a bunch of these in various sizes, both old and "new," and I honestly can't tell them apart. When you compare that to the current crop of Irwins, it's hard not to be disappointed. Although some Pony/Jorgenson products are no longer as good as they once were, these clamps are.

Clamp with a shabby appearance
3/5

After about 4 or 5 clamping, two of the four in the pack have already stripped and will not clamp. I decided to take a chance on made in China because of the Jorgensen name. I was, however, completely incorrect. Jorgenson never put these to the test, in my opinion. They were never particularly strong to the touch, and the stripping indicates that there was too much plastic and not enough metal.

Irwin is a well-known name in the single-purpose clamping industry
5/5

I've had a few of their clamps for several years to use in various DIY projects around the house, and I'm a big fan of their hand aka "quick clamp" world. One of my major gripes with Irwin clamps has always been that they don't have any non-metallic parts. I've always had a problem with grabbing marring pads, starting to clamp something, and then having to stop what I was doing to retrace my steps through the yard or house to find where the pads fell off (I'm sure I'm not the only one); After about 6 months, the Irwins' clamping strength and trigger torque seemed to deteriorate, but they were still usable as a third hand if I didn't need a lot of pressure for things like glue ups or keeping things from spinning while drilling. I switched to DeWalt clamps after my local hardware store ran out of Irwin clamps one day, I didn't trust the store-branded clamps' cheap construction, and DeWalt clamps were the only namebrand option; I was hesitant at first because hand tools aren't DeWalt's bread and butter, but after three years of use, I can honestly say I haven't had the same problems with these clamps as I had with the Irwin branded clamps. br>br>As I've gotten more into woodworking, I've discovered that the old adage "you can't have too many clamps" is true (or extra "hands" in my case this week with a project). I didn't need anything with a lot of clamping power, so I was looking for quick clamps and came across this 4pc bundle under Jorgensen. br>br>Once again, I was cautiously optimistic about these clamps, but I didn't want to pay DeWalt's price and felt that returning to Irwins would be a step backwards; I'd read that the "Pony" name had been dropped from Jorgensen's branding, and that manufacturing had moved to China, which concerned me as well. br>br>I'm blown away by the quality of the clamps after receiving them. The clamps are extremely sturdy, and I wouldn't hesitate to use them for glue-up jobs. small projects, such as puzzle boxes and jewelry boxes, etc. Unlike Irwin and other brands, marring pads are well-engineered to stay in place and do not easily slide on and off. Instead, they have thick lips that require some effort to remove and then reapply. br>br>The release trigger is also well-placed within the trigger's body; My Inrwin and DeWalt clamps had a release trigger that I was constantly scraping with my knuckle. These clamps are also more versatile than those from other brands. 1) It's simple and tool-free to switch the end around to use as a spreader. Rather than having to remove the mechanical stop in the bar as I've seen with other brands, I can simply press a button on the clamp's end to release it from the bar. 2) If needed, you can join two Jorgensen clamps together to make a longer clamp, as the clamp ends are molded with matching puzzle shapes that securely join two clamps together, limiting the use of the combined clamps to a single hand - No more juggling the clamps and the work pieces you're clamping together while trying to line up opposing clamp faces with both hands! This second feature was unexpected, but I can think of at least a dozen occasions in the last two years when I could have used it if it had been available on my Irwin or DeWalt clamps! br>br>If you're on the bubble, I'd recommend giving these clamps a try! For the time being, Amazon is still showing the 4 PC package priced just 25% more than the 2pc PKG, so it remains a very strong value while supplies remain, so it I'm actually ordering another set for myself to keep in the garage where they'll get a lot of use, and I'm sending all the Irwin and DeWalt clamps to the basement and backyard shed for when I'm in a pinch for something and don't want to go to the garage.

The jaw is reversible and the release trigger is strange
4/5

This pair of clamps is a match made in heaven. I despise the situation. You can never have too many clamps, as the saying goes, so when I needed some more, I decided to give these a try because I trust Jorgensen tools. The Pros: br>br>The Pros: br>br>The Pros: br>b The jaws have a lot of pads and surface area, and the grip coverage is great. The build quality is what you'd expect from a company like theirs. The reversible end jaw is the clamp's best feature, and it's a fantastic idea. The entire end part of the clamp comes off with the push of a big, easy-to-reach button, allowing you to flip it around to make a spreader or invert it so you can use the dovetail socket to hook on another clamp to make it longer. This is fantastic and I think it's a brilliant piece of industrial design. This is a feature that should be included in every clamp! The Drawbacks: br>br> Between the handle and the compression trigger is a small piece of plastic that serves as the release trigger. This clamp is unusual in comparison to most others, and it is in an unusual location. The "clamp culture" has evolved, and most of us instinctively reach for the release when we're in a certain position, only to find it missing. It's like getting into a car and discovering that the gas and brake pedals aren't where you expect them to be. Adjusting is possible, but it's inconvenient and counterproductive. I'm not sure why they did this, and I'm not sure why they made it different from the rest of the clamps on the market. To top it off, the release trigger's material is flimsy. While I trust Jorgensen's quality control, that trigger makes me suspicious. The only way to find out is to wait. br>br>Conclusion: br>br> I'm glad I purchased these; I use them frequently and they've performed admirably thus far. However, I'm hesitant to purchase another set because that damn trigger drives me insane, especially when I'm in a hurry to glue something. They slow me down in the worst-case scenario. Jorgensen will have a hands-free system if they ever change the release trigger position to match the rest of the world's speed clamps. winner from the bottom.

It was difficult for me to tighten them
3/5

I bought some 4x4s to do some projects in my new old house, and apparently the virus has crippled lumber delivery to the big box stores, or perhaps it's not being harvested, but finding lumber that wasn't split the majority of the length has been unbelievably difficult, so I bought these and put the liquid nails in the 1/4" wide splits and squeezed as hard as I could, but the splits didn't budge. My age could be a factor because I've lost a lot of the strength I used to have, so I can't recommend it if you live alone and have lost strength. If not, go ahead and try.
