It functions in the same way that a claw would. The fruits are snatched up by the device and dropped into the basket.
As far as I'm aware, you can't order any extra sections.
My guess is that you'll be able to pick some, but it won't be very effective because the prongs on the basket are 1" apart, so the fruit needs to be much larger than that to avoid falling out or sliding right between the prongs.
Not in the least. This fruit picker is made of lightweight stainless steel; I purchased several 13-foot fruit pickers to assist my grandfather in picking apples; it is extremely light and simple to use.

This thing is incredible! I wanted a fruit picker to keep in my car so I could pick fruit from trees that were hanging over people's fences in my neighborhood. It's public property at that point, but it's always courteous to inquire ahead of time; it's simple to put together and disassemble. It comes with a carrying case and takes up little room in my car.
I had a preconceived notion of what was inside the package based on all the other fruit picker poles I'd seen and the one I'd owned when I received it. Oh! I was pleasantly surprised at how far I was off the mark. It occurred to me that my husband used to invest in SAAB, Volvo, and Mercedes as a master auto technician. And, like the majority of SNAP ON tool owners, I'm proud of my new fruit picker for the same reason. It's made of stainless steel, and it's of excellent quality.
You are a fantastic fruit picker! One issue with these fruit picking poles/baskets is that when I pull on the fruit to free it from the tree, the basket usually pulls away from the pole. This one appealed to me because it has a screw that runs through the basket's base as well as the pole, preventing the basket from pulling away from the pole. This basket, like the pole, is well-made and sturdy. The fruit is protected by a soft vinyl coating on the basket. I have large grapefruits and still have to be careful not to puncture them with the basket prongs; this is due to the nature of the beast, not a flaw with this brand. The stainless steel pole is made up of sections that screw together to allow you to adjust the length. The fruit was also protected by a foam pad in the basket, as well as a nice heavy nylon bag with a pull string for collection. Not only was I pleased with the product, but I was also pleased with the price.
This picker is one of my favorites, and - the majority of the time - It fulfilled my requirements. My only gripe is that it has a tendency to scratch and gouge some apples. 14 of them, at the most. When you try to pull the apples off the tree, they don't seem to be securely "captured," so it can be an awkward battle. Frequently, the apple is harmed as a result of this. If I were designing a picker, the "grabbing" part of the tines (beyond where they turn 90 degrees) would be a little longer (about 14") and the ends would be less sharp. I believe this design was created to accommodate a wide range of fruit sizes, and while it would be ideal for smaller apples and the like, it is not ideal for large honeycrisp apples.
The construction of this fruit picker is excellent. The basket and handle are both sturdy, but light enough that I have no trouble lifting it high into the tree to pick fruit. The handle is made up of six sections that snap together easily, making storage and transportation a breeze. It also means that if the fruit is close to the ground, you can reach it with only a few sections. I'll be picking oranges and lemons with the picker. The basket is large enough to accommodate two people. I'm very happy with this picker because it can handle three pieces of fruit at once.
It's even better than I imagined it would be: super strong, not wobbly, and capable of picking a fruit in a matter of seconds. I love it because it will pay for itself in no time.
BUT . I got it and put it together today. The hose clamps that secure the head to the pole aren't the usual screw-driver tightened clamps - they're a little different. To tighten the clamp, they use a wing nut-like head. It's a lot less difficult if you do it this way. right - YES, BUT BE WARNED! When you tighten the hose clamp band, the end comes straight through (as shown in the photo), and if you're not careful, you can slice your thumb open, as I did. It's a good product, but be cautious when putting it together!.
We used it on peach and apple trees, and it worked wonderfully! It was exciting for the kids to be able to pick apples from high in the trees. br>br>When you disassemble it, it even comes with a bag that holds all of the pieces. I'm 5'8" tall with a 15-foot reach. When all of the pieces are in place, the finished height is 20". br>br>It's entertaining as well as practical! Thanks!.
