Questions & Answers

Why does the information state that shipping is free, but when I go to check out, it asks me to pay for shipping? (I was born in Sofia, Bulgaria.) ?

There are a lot of sellers on Amazon. Free domestic shipping is available from a few retailers. If you're logged into your Amazon account, the shipping costs to your location will be displayed. If you aren't logged in, Amazon assumes you're a customer from the United States and displays the generic shipping cost. Many retailers do not offer international shipping. Because international shipping is so expensive, you won't be able to find any that are free.

Is it possible to carve large chunks of rock out of a single piece with these?

Tool that will last a long time. In order to keep the size of my digs under control, I use a large chisel or bar and a strong Estwing mash hammer.

What is their manufacturing location? Tks! ?

America is a rock-solid structure that has stood the test of time.

Is this hammer made of steel that has been heat treated?

Yes. Videos of the hammers being heated and then quenched in oil can be found on YouTube.

Although there are some issues with quality control, this is still a very useful tool
3/5

I discovered that the plate at the bottom that holds the leather rings in place was not properly installed. There's a little bit of wiggle room here. The weatherproofing coating has now cracked and flaked off as a result of this. in the absence of the elements- Because the coating on the leather is going to fall apart, I'm thinking about sending it back to be replaced or repaired. br>** I received my replacement: br>The grinding on this hammer's head is not consistent. The hammer's face isn't quite flat for some reason. This hammer's handle does not have the contours that I previously admired. and the handle in general appears to have been beaten up a little (possibly during shipping), but none of these issues will prevent me from using this tool. It'll be used to smack rocks, after all. It's surprising how different the grinding and finishing of the two hammers are. So, do you go out and find the PERFECT hammer in a retail store, or do you order on Amazon and either keep sending it back until they send the right hammer, or settle for one that is just good enough? This rock hammer performs admirably for its intended purpose. I'll be a little more picky with some other tools. br>*
I am an engineer working near Times Square in Manhattan, and I purchased this tool to inspect the quality of rock for building foundations. This tool was created specifically for this purpose. I was surprised at the size of the rock I was able to cleave out using the pick's leverage because the pick's end was shaped perfectly to get into the schist seams. The hammer head was hit several times but showed no signs of damage. The coatings (print and paint) wore off quickly, but there were few scratches on the metal surface. br>br>The handle is shaped in such a way that I would choke up on it when tapping the hammer against the rock face. (to listen) or I can use physics to my advantage and hold down at the bottom of the handle and give an arcing swing to put some real force into the strike. br>br>I also used the pick end of the break up to help clear out some clays and it had no problem doing sobr>attached photos are of handle profile, hammer in field, and problems from loose rivets I have also included my replacement's head mis-alignment. shape. br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>** LATEST UPDATE*
My time with Estwing hammers appears to be coming to an end. The leather handle series is not intended for use. Only made to be used as wall hangings and toys to show off to others to prove how tough you are. I'm going to put this pos back together with shims and epoxy and abuse it until it dies. When that happens, I'll switch to a different manufacturer. Any other manufacturer would be insane if a tool designed to hit rocks could not withstand even a minor amount of abuse.

On the special edition, there is a cheap black coating
3/5

When the geologists' hammer arrived, it was covered in four unnecessary stickers, all of which left a thick residue when removed. Stickers on my tools are not something I want. When attempting to remove the sticker residue, the cheap black powder coat was easily removed as well. I'm pretty sure the black coating won't make it through my next trip. Manufacturer Recommendation: Use non-residue-causing stickers, or better yet, include them in the packaging. Use a more durable coating if you plan to continue selling a higher-priced model. Buyer's recommendation: Purchase the base model with a silver finish. The black coated model is just a cheap asthetic, so you're not getting your money's worth.

My purchase has made me extremely happy
5/5

This is an excellent tool that will last a lifetime if you take the time to sand off the varnish on the handle, as another reviewer recommended for the Estwing Sportsman's Axe. It's a clear shellac that will eventually crack, so after removing all the stickers, the first thing you should do is remove the factory varnish. I'm so glad I found the instructions for how to do this that I decided to write a review for the rock hammer so that I could share it with others: br>br>Begin by taping off the metal part of the handle and sanding off the varnish on the grip with 100 grit sand paper (the color will lighten as you sand). Then rub neatsfoot oil on the leather several times a day until it no longer absorbs any more. (It takes approximately three hours. ) It took four days and multiple coats of oil to complete. ) Look for A. for a more in-depth explanation of the process. "This is the real deal!" Swenson said in his review of the 14" Sportsman Axe. (It's well worth reading; it's a far better explanation of the process than what I've given here. ) ) While this is a little extra work for something you just bought, if you're like me and like to customize your tools frequently, it's actually quite enjoyable. I used lighter fluid to remove any remaining adhesive from the stickers, and steel wool to polish out any scratches. br>br>I bought this rock hammer after I bought the axe, and they've both held up well to sanding. procedure involving oil! I don't anticipate needing another in my lifetime, and I prefer the look and feel of this model to others available.

The quality is extremely poor
3/5

This is the worst from estwing that I've ever seen. This was the worst leather-wrapped tool I've ever owned: the rings were uneven, one was cut, the finishing and grind were very uneven, and there were several errors that should never have passed quality control. Even the off-brand tools sold by Walmart were of far higher quality. I sent the first one back because the end cap was loose and rattled when you struck it; however, the second one was even worse; I have always enjoyed estwing, but this is unacceptable. I'm beginning to believe they're selling leftovers or defective items that didn't make the cut.

The hammer looks great, feels sturdy, and I'm looking forward to using it when the time comes (when a new one arrives in the mail)
4/5

Not a fan of the packaging and effects. One of the thin, white, bubble-lined packages was used to send this. When I opened the package, I noticed the corner had been torn through, and the plastic safety piece meant to keep the pointy end of the hammer from becoming too pointy had been smashed and was now useless as it lay at the bottom of the bag. The hammer's steel has blemishes, as do tools, but it's difficult to tell what happened due to the packaging. A couple of dents can also be found on the handle. All- All in all, a fantastic tool; however, I believe the packaging for such items should be reconsidered.

The quality is poor
3/5

For the past three years, I've been using this extensively. You won't be able to tap rocks or listen to them because the bottom plate will rattle and eventually come loose. After years of whacking granite, the shaft was warped, and the milling was uneven and unprofessional. It's a good hammer, but it's a little too expensive. I'm not sure if I still want to purchase estwing. According to all of the reviews, quality control is no longer in place. This appears to be a knock-off. off.
