Questions & Answers

Is this an effective axe for felling trees with a medium to large diameter?

It's a wood splitting maul (blockbuster in Aussie speech), not an axe. A chainsaw is far superior to a chainsaw for felling trees. A purpose-built felling axe, such as a Plumb, Kelly, Gilpin, or Gransfors, is an alternative, but you'd need to be very skilled and fit to use one. I'm sure Fiskars makes good felling axes, but the Iso Core isn't.

What does it have in common with the well-known Fiskar x27?

It's not the same at all. If the wood you're trying to split is tough, like twisted elm, and you need repeated strikes, I like that the 8 lb maul's Iso Core handle absorbs vibration much better than the X27m. The X27 is a shorter, lighter axe to swing (rather than a maul), making it ideal for splitting straight-grained wood. The 8-pound maul is ideal for splitting large rounds, and it is my personal favorite for heavy splitting.

What is the measurement between the cutting edge's center and the widest point of the flared cheeks?

The distance between the cutting edge and the widest point of the wedge was 4 inches. 75 inches in length, with a 2-inch wedge. The best wedge I've ever used is 75 inches wide at its widest point.

It's ideal for splitting wood and transporting to other worlds
5/5

I had to have a 60-foot pin oak removed from my front yard after it died. Because I have a wood-burning fireplace, I politely requested that the tree guys leave the wood. They had left it in rounds, which I had to split. When the box arrived, there was a noticeable weight to it. The first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box was that my polo shirt had turned into a red flannel and that I had grown a full, lush beard. That was something I hadn't anticipated. To get started, I take it outside, but the steam from my breath obscures my view of the mountains. This was a little perplexing, especially since I don't live near any mountains and it was August, but I didn't have time to be distracted; I needed to get to work. It's time to split some wood. I prepared for the first round by getting into a good stance, raising the maul above my head, and bringing that mother down. Oh, how satisfying, my sweet lord - The two freshly split logs fall to the soft earth with a loud crack and two thumps. I took a red bandana from my pocket to wipe the sweat off my brow (I don't own a bandana) and raised the maul to my shoulder. A red-tailed hawk appeared out of nowhere. A scream comes from the sky, and a tail hawk lands on the blade, right next to my head. I can't move because I'm terrified. The hawk looked me in the eyes and said, "Nice swing, brah," after what seemed like an eternity of uncomfortable, terrifying silence. It takes off in the direction of the mountains, where the sun is setting. My beard has vanished when I return home. My shirt has returned to its previous state. When I look out the window, all I see is a dull, flat horizon. "Sweet Jesus, are you OK?" my wife asks as she rushes over, visibly upset. For two minutes, a hawk was about 4 inches away from your face, and you just stood there staring at it like an idiot! "br>br>In any case, the maul is fantastic.

Behold! Mjölnir has been reforged! My entire life has been spent splitting wood incorrectly
5/5

This is something I should've bought years ago. br>br>I use a wood stove to heat my home. I'm also a shopper who prefers to purchase rounds. They're less expensive than split wood, and splitting and stacking them gives me a great workout. br>br>I've spent my entire life using an axe, a wedge, and a 5 pound short handle sledge. I misplaced the sledge somewhere on my 7-acre property over the summer. I came here to get a replacement and came across this incredible device; yes, it's pricey, but I immediately recognized the implications of its design. It had only been two days since it had been delivered. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh My. It flies through pine rounds like a hot knife through soft butter. br>br>It flies through pine rounds like a hot knife through soft butter. br>br>It flies through pine rounds like a hot knife through soft butter. It easily splits even the heaviest rounds. I have the impression that I am Gandalf, wielding Glamdring. Rounds shattered like orc helms on the cheap. It encourages you to scream like a Viking warrior as you slay rounds and turn them into firewood. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG Only after you've surrounded yourself with the vanquished's shards, which are now piled knee deep, do you notice that your body is tired, your brow is dripping, your breath is short, and your body is steaming in the cold air - that you realize you've split a month's worth of heat in a matter of minutes. You can relax now. br>br>My only criticism is that it is WAY TOO EFFECTIVE. It flies right through the subject round, splitting my sturdy anvil of a very large Ponderosa Pine round that I've been using for years as a base for splitting. To keep it safe, I may need to cover it with plywood. This is an excellent tool. br>br> It is something I will treasure. It is something I intend to use. As a family heirloom, I'll hand it down to my sons.

Maul: 8lbs. There's no need to be concerned about the wood pile. My father used to go out every now and then with a maul and split wood when I was a little girl. Doing something like this myself has always been categorized as "yeah right, I'm a girl. " " And I'm not just a girl — I'm a 45-year-old office worker who was disappointed when she tried to buy one of those straps to attach her iPhone to her bicep and couldn't find one small enough to stay on her arm. br>br>Now I'm on number four. 5 acres with pyromaniac tendencies and a slew of dying ash trees. I ended up buying a chainsaw and then a Sun Joe 10-inch saw. hydraulic log splitter with a ton capacity (fantastic! ) and, most recently, this Fiskars maul, which weighs in at 8 pounds. I'm now using the maul instead of the hydraulic splitter more frequently because it's faster, and it makes me feel even more like a super hero when I cut through a 16-inch round in one go. It turns out that splitting wood doesn't require brute strength; the maul and gravity take care of the majority of the work. Love it!.

When splitting oak, it cracked in half

***UPDATE**
Using this link, I was able to contact Fiskars (and upload photos of the broken maul). They responded in less than two hours, informing me that a brand new one would be sent to replace the broken one. They followed up with an email with a tracking number a few days later. br>br>On March 9th, I filed a warranty claim and on March 16th, I received a brand new maul. For me, that's sufficient. Fiskars was fantastic, and I'm a lifelong customer. br>_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It formed a deep crack on both sides of the head while splitting some Post Oak. br>br>I tried going to Fiskars' Warranty Contact Form and their General Contact Form, but both links were broken ('Page Not Found' errors). br>br>This product would certainly be worthy of a 5-star rating. If I could use it indefinitely, I'd give it a five-star rating. However, it is not safe at this time. Fiskars/seller/warranty administrator - br>br> If you're reading this, please get in touch with me. There's still a lot of oak to split for me!.

Fiskars warranty claim process a shambles after a few years of use
3/5

After filing a warranty claim, Fiskars informed me that I would be responsible for shipping the mail back to them, despite the fact that I had sent multiple photos and proof of the damage. When I told them I wouldn't be paying the shipping costs and asked for a prepaid label for something so heavy and large, they told me I'd have to saw off the head and then send just the handle. That is completely absurd. I understand the need for proof of damage, but charging your customer for shipping on something with a lifetime warranty that breaks after a few years is poor customer service. I own a dozen Fiskars products and will never buy another.
