Well, I've never been to north Alabama, but with eight coats on in my upstate New York outside shower - Despite piles of snow and harsh weather, the cedar shower is still in excellent condition after 5 years. If done properly, this stuff is as hard as nails.

My boat docks have wood rails that are exposed to the elements, including sunlight, rain, snow, and bird poop. This is the best varnish on the market; it blows Minwax and similar spar varnishes out of the water. It comes out of the can quite thick, so I thin it slightly with DMVP naptha before applying it thickly. It's like pancake syrup on top of pancakes. It's necessary to maintain a wet edge and brush it out as you go. It takes a long time for the paint to dry. The temperature must be at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit. But when you're done, you'll have a glassy, high-gloss finish that will last all year in any weather. Now that I've found it, it's the only varnish I use! After it has dried, lightly sand with 220 grit (300 grit is preferable) sandpaper before applying a second coat. Every fall, invest in a new coat that will keep you warm all winter long. In the spring, give it another go.
