The item I received was of poor quality, and I have my doubts that it came from the United States. After a few passes with sand paper, I was able to remove the shoulder and anvil, which both had sharp edges. Second, the milling burr on the ruler-guiding rail protrudes into the anvil, catching on the work piece – see image attached. This was extremely aggravating. I try to break it with a center punch by hand; I tried sanding the anvil in a glass plate without using a hammer, but it was too difficult. After a few passes, I noticed that the anvil was not perfectly flat, so I used my engineering square to check the tool's squareness. It was only slightly out of square, which is acceptable for woodworking in my opinion. The burr was gone, the anvil was flat, and the tool was dead square in ref after 20 minutes of slowly flattening the anvil. to my square of engineering The issue has been resolved. Third, when compared to my old 12 inch Stanley, the adjustable knob wasn't as smooth when locking the ruler. However, for the time being, it securely holds the ruler. However, I believe that after a long period of use, it will deteriorate and begin to lose its grip on the ruler. That, however, has yet to be established. br>br>I bought this item because I was expecting it to be of good quality. It should be perfect right out of the box.
It's a rectangle! Not all squares are the same size! This one is extremely precise and well-made. Yes, it's pricey, but so is good quality. In order to match up, I'll be purchasing the 12 in Starrett soon.
br>This is one of those products where I can't say one thing is better than another brand's product; the entire experience for me has been Starrett is just really good and works as it should every time; they also feel right, whatever that means. br>This is one that is well worth the extra money, and unless I misplace it, I should never need to buy another one.
Recently, I purchased a Starrett C33H- 4R 12- Inch Combination Square to replace an old (late 1970s) Stanley 12" that was no longer up to the task in my hobby woodworking. I like it a lot, but I don't use it all of the time - In my apron, I have an Empire 6" from Home Depot. Because its size is more appropriate for most of what I do, I use the 6" for the majority of my markings. br>br>I thought I'd give this "cheap" Starrett 6 a shot. I couldn't find much information about it, but I decided to take a chance because of my other Starrett and the Starrett squares I used in the 1980s. The main difference appears to be the lack of a scribe or spirit level, but I don't use those very often anyway, and if I do need the level, I can use another tool. br>br>As expected, and in comparison to the Empire 6", this square is nice and heavy. br>br>To get the lock to lock down, you'll need a lot of torque. Why is that? I'm not sure. My C33H's thumb nut is smaller than this one. The blade moves unless you tighten it down really tight. br>br>However, it is the blade that has disappointed me the most. It's made of steel and hasn't been given a finish. The numbers and markings are nearly as difficult to read as those on my old Stanley 12". With time, I believe they will become more difficult to read. It's possible that the blade will rust as well. br>br>I'm going to return it and get the C11H- instead. The only reason I can see myself keeping this is that, because it will be carried around a lot more, it will be less expensive to replace than the other model. However, I've never dropped a square and am only now upgrading after years of having squares.
This wood is ideal for making furniture.
The bench is a good size for Starrett quality.
However, the shipping time was much longer than it stated when I placed my order.
