I'm only writing about the speed square because the combination square performed flawlessly. This speed square is flawless and accurate. If you're only going to use it on radius edge lumber, that is. It's pretty useless in my furniture shop because there's a slight radius where the lip meets the plate, which prevents it from seating square on a true square cut board; however, it's possible I got a fluke piece because my 30 or 40 year old Swanson will seat true on any board you apply it to. However, this new unit, which was bought to replace a $5 Harbor Freight tool on the miter saw station, will be relegated to the truck box for rough construction.

These squares have been in my possession for approximately two years. I'm not a contractor, and I treat my tools with respect. I've made use of the 6-point system on a number of occasions. more frequently than the 12-inch square inch. I'd never had any problems with this square until I used it to check the alignment of a cabinet hardware jig recently. The square's large bottom plate isn't perfectly flat. It is warped by about 1/16 of an inch across the length, which is significant for a piece of this size. I set it down on a flat surface and double-checked it. Although I understand that this is a framing square, it caused me to doubt the tool's accuracy. When I contacted Swanson, they offered to replace the square if I sent this one in for inspection. Regrettably, shipping would almost entirely cover the cost of a replacement.

BOTH OF THE TOOLS WAS BENT WHEN IT WAS RECEIVED. It's a wonderful package. means that it was bent before it was shipped! Really ! Both of them have been bent! The 12" is bent over the long and short sides with a 1/16" deviation on each side. br>The 7" is bent over the long and short sides with a 1/16" deviation on each side. nearly 1/16" deviation on each side in places unrelated to the 12"br>br>There's nothing I can do about it, but An extremely durable tool like this should not arrive bent, and should at the very least be thoroughly inspected and run through a conformity jig before leaving the factory. So much for quality in the United States. br>br> it's humiliating.

A flaw in the casting of the speed square, most likely due to a worn out mold, can be seen. When you press the square against the work piece, there is a 3/4" bump along the straight edge that causes it to rock from side to side, throwing you off. At this price point, I didn't expect much, but the speed square I got is useless because the straight edge isn't flat. I attempted to flatten it, but then doubted my sanity and tossed it in the trash. br>I prefer the combination square. It's reasonably well machined, especially for the price.

Let me just say that, like many other woodworkers, I assumed that a couple of cheap plastic squares would suffice in squareing up my boards for cutting. I've decided to step it up a notch, and I recently purchased some really nice squares from PEC Tools. I used the same square test as I did with the PEC combination squares to ensure that these squares were square. You know how you scribe a line on a perfectly straight board and then flip the square over to make a line with the square's opposite side? Let me tell you something. There isn't even a smidgeon of deviation from the line! Both of these Swanson squares were nearly identical to the much more expensive PEC squares in terms of accuracy. This book comes highly recommended.

I WAS WRONG, BY THE WAY! This set of tools was of excellent quality, and the accompanying book was invaluable in getting me up and running quickly. IF YOU DO ANY BUILDING, THIS IS A MUST HAVE SETUP! I only shined it on before because they were terrible, but this company produces a valuable and necessary tool that you must have if you want to get great results and avoid looking like a bumbling idiot. You can't beat the price for the quality, and it will most likely outlast me. Don't put it off any longer; get the set now before you mess up future projects. I'm sorry I was such a cheapskate and didn't spend the extra twelve dollars. From the start, you'll be paying $14 for a HIGHEST QUALITY essential for your shop or toolbox!.

I decided to make a wooden work bench for myself, which was something I had never done before. I'm not a carpenter, just a regular guy who enjoys doing odd jobs around the house, and this was going to be the biggest one yet. I saw a lot of videos where people used a speed square to keep their work nice and square, so I decided to get one. This one appealed to me because it included two squares. There are two of them: one large and one small. Following the videos, it wasn't difficult to figure out how to use it. Everyone should have at least one of these squares in their toolbox because there are so many different ways to use it. I would not have known whether my work bench was built squarely if it hadn't been for the use of this square. My bench turned out to be ridiculously nice and square as a result of this square. That is a significant achievement for me. I haven't tried all of the possibilities with this square yet, but knowing that I can use it whenever I need it is reassuring. br>These are made of aluminum, which I like. If properly cared for, these will last a lifetime. These even include a book to assist those of you who are interested in actually building a house, which I am not. If you do decide to purchase a Swanson square, I recommend purchasing the two-pack to save money. I've included some photos of my workbench construction.

I ordered the 12-inch square, 7-inch square, and booklet combo twice in a row. I got the 7" square and the booklet both times, but not the 12" square. If you make a mistake or have a fluke once, it's unacceptable to make it twice in a row. Before the order is boxed and shipped out the door, Amazon needs a human to review it! The previous box was insufficiently large to accommodate the 12" square - come on! The idea of purchasing a product made in the United States appealed to me, and the 7" squares appeared to be excellent. I wish I had had the opportunity to look through the booklet as well. I guess I'll just have to go to the local store and look at what I'm getting before my money leaves my hands and gets stuck for weeks because of a stupid mistake. Swanson is still on my shopping list, but not on Amazon.
