Aluminum is used to make the tool bodies that slide on the steel ruler. I'm not the one who makes the product. I purchased one as a consumer. It appeals to my tastes. It's a long-lasting and precise device.
It would work with the four-foot ruler if it had the same notch opening. In the notch, there is an insert.
Where else but China can you find something like this?

A steel ruler with iron accessories and a glass level for measuring appeared to be included in this item. The stainless steel ruler was the only thing that was completely accurate. The rest was either plastic or a composite like aluminum, with some type of sticker to replace the actual engraved markings in order to remain "true"; if the person who placed the sticker on the compass was even 1 micron off, the entire thing would be off. Look somewhere else if you're looking for accuracy. Aside from that, it's all missing a case, so don't waste your money on it.
With the various heads to choose from, this combination square is quite versatile. It's ideal for calculating angles and accurately transferring wood from one piece to another. It seems too frail to withstand daily use on a jobsite in and out of a tool pouch, so it's better suited for the shop. However, it is a cost-effective tool.
The standard of excellence is lacking: China sends garbage. The ruler is made of stainless steel, but the rest of the item is made of a low-cost alloy. The pins in the attachments fall out when the ruler is removed. It was a total waste of money.
This was a low-cost item that serves me well in my machine shop.
Almost entirely made of plastic, with no way to secure the angle. This item is not something I would recommend. Spend your money on a higher-quality product.
I try to save money and will occasionally take a chance on an extremely low-cost item. I get lucky every now and then. This sort of thing happens to me now and then. Spend the extra money on something more valuable.
There was no keeper for the adjustment screw when I removed the protractorbr>br>That would make this the ideal combination for anyone's shopbr>br>I only needed the 45 degree corner square featurebr>br>.
I knew I wasn't going to get a good square for the money, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. The retaining thumb screws on the square I received do not secure the various components. When I apply light pressure against them, they sort of slide out of the position I locked them into. Even if you aren't looking for precision, it is still useful. Is it possible to use a straight edge with this method? Yes. Is it possible to locate the centerline of a piece of round stock? Kind of. I suppose my point is that if you don't mind being "close enough," it's not a bad buy. You'll have to pay a premium for precision. I hope you found this information to be beneficial.
