I don't think so. If the tile mortar is used on a rough surface like wood, it must stick. Prepare the surface by putting down 1/4 plywood Don't screw it up - On top of the plywood, apply tile mortar. To apply mortar, first dampen a sponge and then apply it over plywood. If you place the tiles on an uneven floor, they will lip up.

The Kerdi membrane stands head and shoulders above Durock, Hardie Backer, and RedGuard. It's a matter of pros and cons with each one. The Kerdi Board system is by far the best! I will never use anything else after spending a few extra dollars. There are no longer the days when cement boards had to be carried on a broom, knives were used to cut through cement, and cursing if you tried to cut a round hole in a piece of cement board. The pros are The boards are SOOO light, but they are strong enough to span 16" between studs. Despite their relatively high weight, they are secure when on the wall.

It is impossible for a DIY guy like me to find Schluter Kerdi Board or any Schluter product within a reasonable driving distance. As a rule, I don't leave feedback and when I found out this expensive product is mostly foam, I was very hesitant to order it. Normally I order from big box stores and have them ship to the store so I can inspect the items before I pick them This was my concern based on the feedback I read that indicated it might arrive damaged.
