Taking out the rubber strip would lead to very little additional clearance since the rubber strip sticks out by less than 1/8" from the metal bar. I cannot imagine there being a problem as long as you do not want to hang three thick towels, folded double and stacked one on top of the other, over the bar.
The grab bars come in both 18" and 24" lengths, and both have rubber grips on the back side. We think these grab bars are great.

I am using it as a towel bar and it is very attractive and works well. I have used it for 2 hand towels and it has not caused me any problems at all. Others have mentioned the clearance being tight if you are using for thick bath towels, but I am using it for 2 hand towels and am having no problems. The toilet tissue holder matches perfectly with the grab bar of the Moen toilet. These are a couple of tips for installation The *br*- Unless you intend to secure this item to studs, Securemount anchors will not come with it. You will need to purchase them separately if you do not want to use them. When studs are not available, in addition to being easy to install, these are also extremely secure. I recommend them highly. The securemount is manufactured by MOAN (Moan SMA1005CH). The Securemount anchors are sold individually and do not come in pairs, so theoretically you could mount the Securemount anchors on either end and mount the bar to a stud at Because the brackets for the bars are mounted on top of the Securemount anchors, you would notice it much more clearly if you used Securemount on just one end of the bars. I'm installing grab bars in both of the new bathrooms that I'm designing and building in this series. We are very satisfied with them as a whole. An alternative to grab bars would be to use them Because they can be used both as towel bars and as a decorative elements, I plan on using them everywhere I place a towel bar. I really like the chrome finish, and the quality is excellent. If you used this method, you could screw in screws from almost any point on the block to your mounting base.
