Power Probe PP319FTCBLK III - Black

In 2015, I bought this exceptionally well-made test set. I'd always made my own with a 12 volt light and a 10-foot extension cord. Why didn't I get this sooner? After three years, I've found this test set to be a top notch time saver, one of the BEST investments for maintenance and repair of the trucks my mother and I rely on for our isolated life here in extreme N. I'm not sure why I didn't get it sooner. (It's 90 miles from the nearest city, and there's no dependable repair shop there that I can afford. ) When I'm driving the 55 miles of dirt back roads to the Interstate in - This set includes almost everything needed to isolate an electrical problem, diagnosis of the many sensor systems that are used on any truck made from the early 1980's (I have a 1986 Ranger and a 1994 GMC K2500), both of which require all systems to operate in sync to run at top efficiency, I have saved countless hours with this test system. If you're a "self-required mechanic," this set will save you a lot of time and keep your sanity. I waited three years to write this review in order to see if this set was a good investment. TOP OF THE LINE!.

Because my trailer's wiring is enclosed, it's even more fun to look for breaks and shorts. While I can and have used my multimeter for testing, I recently came across a video of someone using one of these to test wiring and heard angel choirs singing. It's a godsend to be able to supply power directly to the wiring in order to test whether or not segments are working. It drastically reduced the amount of time and effort required to troubleshoot. It's also a good idea to double-check your crimps and other details before and after taping everything down. I adore it.

I contacted Power Probe tech support and provided the requested information; their response was "we can't help you, talk to Amazon," so I was not impressed. However, Amazon accepted it back the same day, no questions asked; I simply dropped it off at a UPS store, and 18 hours later, I had a new one in my hands. br>br>The probe is decent; it comes with a forty-foot cable and can connect to both a battery and a cigarette lighter. br>br>Its simplicity is its strength; it will beep and display green for a ground and red for power. The display will display voltage down to the tenth of a volt, making probing a breeze. br>br>With the push of a button, the unit can supply power or ground; this is the feature that distinguishes the power probe from a computer-safe test light. This feature is also extremely useful. It does have a grounded alligator clamp that allows for bench testing of removed components, which is a useful troubleshooting tool. It also has some other modes that, in essence, capture voltage transients and can be useful for troubleshooting. br>br>I chose the 3 because it has all of the features that a power probe has and does them better than a standard multimeter or test light for me. The 4 does have a banana plug jack for the attached ground alligator clip, which allows the use of additional probes, which I wish the 3 had. This isn't something I need all of the time or can't work around. br>br>On the other hand, I believe I would prefer to use my fluke for the other features on the four. Overall, I believe the power probe is an excellent addition to my electrical troubleshooting toolkit.

I was able to test the passenger window motor while it was still inside the door. I didn't have high hopes for the white LEDs, but I was mistaken. They're bright, and they usually light up the area where the probe is supposed to go. In any case, I became familiar enough with the tool that I quickly recognized it in the hands of Edd China (a British mechanical genius) on Wheeler Dealer. On the Velocity channel, this isn't a typical product placement. After watching a few more episodes, it's clear that Edd uses it to investigate electrical issues on a regular basis. He never calls it by its name, and he uses the tool to fill the frame with the logo visible - He simply abuses it to no end. This item is made in the United States, and the blow molded case is a good match for the well-designed and well-made tools. The question that needs to be asked is what other tools he employs to make his job easier. I propose that AMZ conduct a tool inventory at Edd's and publish the results as a wish list.

As a mechanic, I can attest to the fact that the Power Probe is fantastic. About 15 years ago, I bought my first Power Probe III off a tool truck and used it all the time. I burned out the switch after about ten years, which required disassembly and soldering in a new one on the older model. I learned from this that you should always press the switch before touching the item you're trying to power up, or the switch contacts will arc. Then it just wore out, with internal wires at the head and leads mostly breaking. At one point, I constructed a new plug end from Right Stuff and heater hose. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that this thing is incredibly useful and simple, and it's a must-have for any professional auto mechanic. And I'm not getting rid of the old one; instead, I'm keeping it in my trunk in case of an emergency.
