My first version of this device controlled the lights in my kitchen and I have always been happy with it. I keep it on my refrigerator to control all the lights. Because the wall switch is situated in an inconvenient location, this is the case. I decided to update this new version when I saw this new version. However, while the addition of having a dedicated button for light themes would have been a nice addition, the lack of magnets on the base would prevent the new version from be easily attached to steel surfaces. It would be necessary to remove the base in order to utilize the same functionality. The magnets on the remote are strong and work well. The old version of the remote did not have a magnetic base, so there was the need for the base. In fact, I prefer to have the switch base remain there as I prefer to have it in the original location, but the new version allows you to remove the switch base entirely and simply mount the remote to any steel structure you have. The benefit, then, is a smaller footprint. My preference is still to have the magnets on the base and to be able to remove the remote, but that's a matter of taste. In the old switch and base there was thick, glossy plastic, which was harder to break. There's a matte finish on the new one, and it feels thin and flimsy, but I'm sure this was done to allow the magnets in the remote to stick to any steel surface. I don't mind that little detail, but it just means that I'd either have to keep the cheap, flimsy, plastic base somewhere or throw it away in case I need it again.
