Questions & Answers

Will this multi-purpose sensor work with my smart thing hub 2nd generation?

Yes.

I thought it was supposed to send a notification when a window or something like that was opened? I have notifications turned on, but I am not receiving any?

Notifications are sent in this case. If you have a compatible speaker connected to your SmartThings hub, it will send text, push, and speaker notifications.

Is it possible to use a hub-connected sensor to turn on a light that is connected to the same wifi network but not to the hub?

I have the sensor in my detached garage, which Ralf is correct about. It's in "garage" mode right now. My Smartthings hub is ethernet-connected to my router. I have a small lamp with a red light bulb that is plugged into a TP-style outlet. In my common room, I've installed a smart outlet. All of the devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. I made a SmartThings automation to turn the lamp on. When the garage door opens, it sends me a text message. When the garage door is closed, I have another automation that turns off the lamp.

Is it possible to use it in conjunction with Alarm? Is there a security system in place at com?

For a list of compatible devices, look at the smartthings app compatibility list. If it's zwave or zigbee, it'll almost certainly work.

Samsung resents us in the back of its mind
4/5

I was unsure whether to give it three or four stars. The number should probably be three, but the device is functional. Nothing says, "We despise our customers," like the quality of the double-sided tape. On the Multipurpose sensor, they use two-sided tape. I can't seem to keep the magnet in place for longer than five minutes; in comparison to the DSC pair it replaced - They'd been on the frame for seven years, and I had to pry, scrape, and curse them off. br>br>I finally came to a conclusion- I was planning on 3D printing a bracket to hold it in place, but now that I think about it - It's nothing more than a magnet, after all. Instead, I should return the DSC magnet to its original location. br>br>Aside from that, the sensor is fantastic. The gap range is out of this world- nearly one meter wide 5in before it starts to look splotchy (! br>br>In a matter of seconds, I paired it a few feet from the hub, then moved it 16 feet in clear air to the door. It trips almost immediately, and the phone that is monitoring it is on a different VLAN, so the latency is only slightly increased. It's great if you can get it to stay where you put it. br>br>.

I have a vacation home that I rent out and I was unable to stay connected due to a lack of battery life
3/5

It has three balconies, and the renters prefer to leave the doors open while the air conditioning is turned on. As a result, I wanted a system that would shut down the thermostat if the doors were left open. Three multipurpose sensors as well as the SmartThings hub were purchased. br>br>While setup was simple, one of the sensors had already lost contact with the hub after only one week. Both of the others are still linked. The one who lost connection was the one who was closest to the hub. This happened in a previous review, and the customer had to remove and replace the battery to get it to work again. This is not an option for me because I do not reside there.

Also, the battery life on the three sensors is 86%, 86%, and 89% after a week or so. Again, I'm not there, so if they need to be replaced every two months or so, this won't work. I was expecting a longer battery life from these. br>br>I'll have to return them and try a different brand.

This is fantastic! These were purchased in pairs
5/5

They were simple to connect to the SmartThings Hub. One is on the back door and the other is on the garage door. br>br>The two-pronged approach br>br> On the main unit, double-sided tape works fine, but on the magnet, it doesn't. The magnet on the back door kept pulling away from the door frame and securing itself to the main unit. The same thing happened when I tried command strips. To prevent the magnet from attaching itself to the main unit, I had to turn it with the flat side facing/attached to the door frame using a command strip. In this position, it performs flawlessly. br>br>In addition, I've already had to replace the battery in the back door opener. I noticed that the battery had dropped to 88% on the second day of the second day of the second day of the second day of the second The sensor went offline two days later, and it was discovered that the battery had failed. I checked the SmartThings app log and could see the progress of the battery dropping and after 20% it just died. Everything appears to be working now that I've replaced the battery. br>br>Excellent product that does exactly what it says on the tin. Just keep an eye on the magnet and the battery that comes with it. EDIT: br>br> Please keep these items separate so that they can be discussed individually.

The tilt / garage door function is operational; however, it is not visible
4/5

This was installed to alert me if the garage door was left open. I like the device, but I'm constantly frustrated by some of Samsung's decisions. 1. br>br> There are no issues with connectivity; the wifi is spread throughout the house, but this device works flawlessly, A! 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br The tilt function works, but there's no way to see a readout for it. I wanted to use it on my garage door to alert me only if the sensor tilted more than 10 degrees. On hot days, I'd be able to open the door a crack without setting off the sensor. No, I'm not allowed to see the readouts, so I won't be able to set an alert based on them. This is a major flaw; you have the functionality, and the data is clearly available; why don't you let us see and use it? Samsung, are you serious? Simply put, WHY? During the call, the tech support guy could see ALL of the tilt numbers from MY device, but you don't let me see them in the app (in either version). 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br The Classic App is something Samsung does not want you to abandon. To get (most) of the functionality I wanted, I had to install both versions. According to the support representative, many people install the Classic app, configure Garage door and alerts, and then delete the app. Huh?

- The garage door function is only available in the Classic App (which I discovered after an hour of trying to figure out why I couldn't find it in the new app). The tilt function is effectively ignored by the new app. Why sell this device as a tilt monitor if we can't see the numbers (but your support staff can) and the one function that relied on the data has been removed?

- The Samsung Classic App is the only place where you can get timed alerts. The new app works if you want to be notified when a door is opened. If you want an alert to go off after it's been open for 5, 10, 30, 60 minutes (or whatever time period you choose), set it up as follows: ) you'll need to get the older version of the app. br>br>What's the bottom line? A fantastic little device that should not require two apps to operate and should provide us with complete access to all of the data it collects. Samsung, why are you doing this? Why did you make the new app's data unavailable and remove functionality? Anyway, I gave it four stars because I was able to set up MOST of the functionality I wanted. That last star will have to wait until I can see the tilt data and set alerts based on it.

Very nice, and a small sensor
5/5

This is a very nice, small sensor that I was able to connect to my SmartThings hub version 2 with ease. On my garage door, I used it as a sensor to open and close it. I've included a screenshot of the instructions for using the SmartThings Classic app to configure it as a garage door (tilt) sensor. Despite the fact that my garage is detached, the sensor has sufficient range to alert me when the garage door opens or closes almost instantly. Also accurate is the temperature sensor. There will no longer be an open garage door all night!.
