I bought this cube to use as a controller for a handful of devices in my home automation system. Okay, there are a couple of minor issues with this device: the first is that Amazon has yet to figure out how to deliver items instantly. Come on, you know what I'm talking about. It can't possibly be that difficult. Pairing was also a pain, to be serious for a moment. I had to give it a couple of tries before I got it right. I don't remember doing anything differently when I got it to work, but it just did. Perhaps I had been overthinking it. OK, now for the GOOD (as in, MIND BLOWING GOOD) stuff: 1. br>br> If they say you need the Aqara Hub to make this work, don't believe them. They are deceiving you. All you need is a Raspberry Pi with Home Assistant installed and a Zigbee dongle connected to it. There is no need to install any additional add-ons with the Nortek one. I repeat: THE AQARA HUB IS NOT REQUIRED. Why would you want to send your activity to the cloud? Keep it local, just like the playas. 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br To get automations to work, you'll need to understand what you're doing and be able to use JSON. I started by subscribing to "zha_event" in the "Events" section of the "Developer Tools" section. After that, click "Start Listening" and fiddle with the cube. I used to have a lot of smart switches in my house, and I really liked them. Time, scene, and other interactions can all influence how they behave. My sister was inspired and wants to replace their old school lite switch with a smart switch, but all smart switches require three wires to operate: load, natural, and ground. My sister has an old house with only load and ground, no neutral wire, so I saw an advertisement for this smart switch that does not require natural wire, which is ideal for her home. The process is similar to that of other smart switches when it comes to installation. The fact that all of the accessories are included is extremely convenient. My installation is on a two-gang box, so this two-button switch only takes up one extra space. So I put another switch in parallel with this one, and they were perfectly aligned. When you buy a regular smart switch from Homedepot, the base of my old smart switch from another brand is fat, and it will pop up the faceplate. For a two-gang installation, I'll need to buy a raised faceplate. And this one works perfectly; I won't have to buy a new faceplate because I can reuse my old one. The design of the buttons is also elegant. It's a hit with my sister.

Nonetheless, it's enjoyable. It's REALLY cute and fun, but its use is limited when you need to account for the device's "sleepiness" (some actions don't reliably trigger). I have this connected to a Hubitat, not an Aquara hub, so that likely influences my experience with the device. br>br>I'm treating it as if it were a small productivity cube - For each side, I used my Cricut to create vinyl labels, and I used the "knock" function to create a variable that appears on my dashboard and serves as a task counter. The "knock" feature appears to be the least likely to be triggered by accident. br>br>You should pair it in the location where you plan to use it rather than moving it. Otherwise, it will lose contact with the hub and will have to be reconnected. paired. It's also not compatible with some Zigbee repeaters, according to some community support threads, so unless you know your repeaters are compatible, you'll want to make sure it pairs directly with the Hubitat vs. Using a repeater that isn't supported. If you don't, it will have to be re-done on a regular basis. paired. br>br>I wouldn't use this to run any critical functions or any functions that would be frustrating if they failed. However, it's a fun little conversation starter.
