You can use an adapter to use 8" duct, although airflow would be reduced slightly. This unit is almost a whole house blower -- it's the size of an air conditioner, but a lot less noisy, because the control unit makes it variable speed.
You can position the Broan HLB11 anywhere in the line about half-way to 3/4 of the way between the two appliances. There is a lack of Reading a review from a customer who had purchased the same downdraft vent prompted me to purchase the unit. It came in a cardboard box, stuffed with spare styrofoam, that was used to transport an HP laser printer. Although it appeared to be in good condition, it was supposed to be brand The unit is VERY BIG, and it comes with an exhaust duck with a diameter of 10". An old vent had a diameter of six inches. As the old vent exhausted into the basement, the unit had to be installed on the joists of the floor. For brackets on the vent, there is a span of 23 inches, and for floor joists it is a span of 16 inches. I had to find out how to do that. It will be installed afterward. There is a lot of noise and vibration from the unit. Although I put padding to deaden the vibrations, it had little effect. I am sure there is a good application for this vent, but do not get it if you are not going to use it in an attic or as I really don't recommend this product for DIY projects. It's too large and bulky for.
Thanks to my extra spending on this model, I am very pleased. I'm using the unit in a thinly insulated crawl space, and the unit is super quiet. Together, it and the Broan elite downdraft make the perfect pair. I am likely to never use more than 50% power because when it is at low power it sucked up all vapors. The inline of the unit comes with 10" transitions by default, so I kept the true 10" ducting. Vibration dampers (sound dampening mats) are the kind of items that people use to dampen sounds The rattle-free aspect is sure to be enhanced in this way. Its quiet operation makes its huge power appear effortless, as if it were coming from no where at all. With the exception of electrical work, I installed everything myself.
I am very pleased with the results.
The unit fits nicely between two engineered trusses between my two floors and provides powerful suction over our six-story open area, which is surprisingly quiet (for a vacuum) There is a stove with a burner. The air is moved around the house on low (which we do not hear), so we leave the fan on all the time. Worked great for me.
This is an excellent fan that runs quietly.
The price is good and the performance is good.
