A short time later (less than 2 months after the event). That's not so much of a deal. When we increased the speed of the original hood fan, the fan got louder and louder until eventually it would flag intermittently. It also sounded like it almost died at times even when the speed was increased. As far as keeping the filters clean is concerned, we keep the filters pretty well maintained so that's unlikely to be the reason. In the market for a new hood, we were unable to find anything in our price range - L- and off and S speeds, which seem to be the standard) - Buying a replacement motor was the right decision for us. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily it installed and that it was blissfully quiet for a short time. I have noticed a gradual increase in vibration rattle and buzz at lower speeds in less than a couple months. We liked the quiet purring of the original as much as we enjoyed the sound of Chinooks landing on the roof with the new one, but it's still quieter than the original. After replacing the new one and finding that most of the vibration noise happens at low speeds, we will try replacing the fan next and see if that improves everything. We've read that other people have been able to get rid of the noise after replacing the fan.

My understanding is that a previous tenant had incorrectly installed the grease filter so it was pressing on the fan blade, resulting in the motor burnout. It only took me about ten minutes to replace the motor, and it worked flawlessly.

The motor I ordered less than two days ago arrived in a very short amount of time and was a direct replacement for a motor that went bad on my nutone range hood. I was able to get in without a hitch.
