Honestly, neither I nor any of the others here can recall the exact order in which they installed theirs and if I recall correctly, the outlet was top left and a squirrel cage fan. So long as air goes in and out of the inlet, I don't think it matters where it goes.

Although the fan is listed with measurements of 3 1/2" (outside diameter) and 2 1/2" (length), the diameter of the rod bore is incorrect at 1/4". You will break the motor fan if you force it into the motor rod that is 1/4" in diameter This was the case with mine. Upon further research, I found that the rod bore opening is actually 7/32" in diameter for the entire rod length, although the opening starts at 1/4" diameter for about an eighth of an inch deep. Then I will update this review once I've spoken to the seller.

The blower wheel on this is exactly the same as the one on my Broan - This Nutone heater works like a charm I no longer hear or feel vibrations from my fan when it makes motor noise.
