Drill the pilot hole for the screws according to the instructions in the manual. You should if you don't want them to You should paint it before it goes up if you want to paint it. There seems to be no issues with the rack. As long as I don't scratch my equipment, I like the wood. You don't have to worry about your equipment hitting the wall with its design.
