I wouldn't let my dog go scuba diving with me.
Although the spool does not lock, you can tie down the spool arm by threading the line through one of the holes. This will stop the line from spooling on its own.
It's a free spin, but when the flag was inflated, it tipped over a lot. To be honest, I'm not sure the dive flag is even close to being regulation size. That, combined with the fact that it is top heavy, has made me dislike this product and I have stopped using it.
Both the crank and the handle are foldable. Is it possible that all you have to do now is spread them out?

This reel is inexpensive, and the "winding" feature (the crank) is nearly useless when you can simply wrap the line around the reel by hand (which I did). This reel is also overwound (i. e. , it has a lot of slack in it). There's a lot of string on the table; It's so small that it barely fits on the reel) Less string and more reel space would make things easier. I actually lost control of a DSMB (which was fortunately picked up by the boat) while fidgeting with this thing. I've replaced this reel with a metal "finger spool," which is much more convenient to use and hasn't caused any problems. br>br>Instead of this product, use a finger spool; they are simple to use and have plenty of extra "reel space" for the string.
I hate having a bunch of stuff hanging off my BCD, and this is small enough to keep in a pocket until needed. It takes a little longer to wind back in, but if you only use it in an emergency or once in a blue moon, I think it's well worth the wait.
I only use it when I need a dive flag above me that I can hold onto because the plastic is cheap and not very durable. I've also unclipped the rope and slid a 2lb weight onto it so I can leave the spool with the weight down and feel safe doing so while I'm free to go wherever I want. You get what you pay for, and while it works and fulfills its purpose, it is rather inexpensive.
The spool itself is nice, but the folding handles are too flimsy, and rewinding the spool after use was difficult because the spool was completely filled with line. The item was returned for a refund.
I attached a carabiner to it and etched a small groove in the plastic to represent the rope being locked when diving. Works well, is small, and is suitable for dives of 60 feet or less.
If it could be clipped to the reel, I'd give it five stars. You can't clip it because the reel is completely full. It's easier to wind with the handle that flips out.
4 stars because when winding the reel in, it could use some sort of guide.
There is a Handel and a crank on the item, according to the description. It didn't come with a Handel or a crank.
