Questions & Answers

How far apart should hooks be?

When fully collapsed, the size is 22 inches (2 feet to the outside). For my son's 18-inch bike, it worked perfectly.

Is there a limit to how far it can spread?

The Bike Beam can accommodate a maximum handelbar to seat tube distance of 28 inches. 75". This is a measurement taken from the outside to the inside.

Is this suitable for a child's bicycle?

It's a tad on the big side. I'm not sure if it'll work on a kid's bike, but you could measure the distance between the seat post and the headset to see if the adapter will fit.

What's the smallest width this thing can handle (post to post/seat to handle bar)?

From the inside of the hoot to the inside of the hook, 22 3/4" is fully retracted.

Selected User Reviews For Saris Beam Bike Tube Adapter, Black, One Size (3040)

I was intrigued by the positive reviews and decided to give it a shot
3/5

My hitch rack is a Thule Helium Hitch. It pressed against the top tube cables on my mountain bike when I tried it. A medium is how I ride. When the clamps engage the seat post and stem, there is an excessive amount of space between them, resulting in a sloppy fit. The product is sturdy, but I'm concerned about the loose cut when riding a heavy mountain bike and driving at 60 mph. On rough roads, the bike will also literally slide back and forth. It's going back to you. I simply don't want to risk it on my expensive bikes. Although it appears to be a fantastic product, using it is a letdown. Despite the fact that the Beam is simple to use, it came with no instructions. They did have a few old videos on their website via YouTube, but they were not for the current model. The website was found to be ineffective.

Although it is very sturdy, it is also very heavy and ill-fitting
3/5

A single piece of metal that is incredibly strong. It's not going to break anytime soon, I'm afraid. It's bulky, doesn't fit the bike frame well, and doesn't do a great job of assisting with the Saris system's odd frame attachment. I'm not sure if there's any other choice.

It's well-made and does its job
5/5

It worked perfectly when I had to transport my daughter's bike 600 miles to college and back. When I purchased it in July 2019 ($33), it was a fantastic deal compared to Yakima or similar bars. It's amazing how much more expensive it's become. I noticed a few questions about fit and size, so I took the photos below with a ruler next to it. One depicts it in its entirety. The inside dimension is shown at its shortest length in the next image, and the outside dimension is shown at its shortest length in the last image. It doesn't lock at any length, but you'll secure it anyway with the provided strap and your bungees. I hope this has been of assistance.

Secure and stable
5/5

After borrowing an X-Box, I recently bought this Tube Adapter. Adapter for ports. Saris makes a better product; both were secure, but the Saris Bike Beam Top Tube Adapter made it easier to attach the adapter in a different way, allowing my bike to have more clearance. This adapter is required to attach any women's bike to any standard truck rack, and I have an Electra Townie (women's). These bikes are huge and cumbersome! The Saris Bones are also available. Hatch Huggers and three trunk racks In general, a fantastic setup! It's also nice to have a warranty that lasts a lifetime. br>br>I did not receive any compensation for writing this review.

Design flaws
3/5

It's made up of two steel tubes with varying diameters that "telescope" together to form an extendable unit/beam. It is easy to extend, but it does not lock in length. It buckles several degrees at the center plastic cuff due to the weight of the bike at the ends and the carrier arms at the 1/4 and 3/4 positions of its extended length, spanning from seat post to steering stem while resting on a pair of carrier arms. This gives the uneasy impression that road bumps will cause the two steel tubes to separate at the center. It was barely long enough for my mountain bike (which I would have told you about if I hadn't forgotten to measure its maximum length before returning it). The two box ends open with a plastic snap that is small and painful to release with your finger/thumb, and too flimsy to give you confidence that they'll keep the ends locked for bumpy road travel. Before you go out and buy a beam, make sure you actually need it. If you need a beam, look for one that is better than this one. Bikes with quick release seats will make leveling the bike for carry easier, but don't expect a level carry unless you have an extra long seat post. If you need a beam, look for one that is better than this one.

Top tube of a bicycle - Saris
4/5

These units, as well as the Tyger and Venzo, are, in my opinion, overpriced. If you're traveling with multiple bikes, the Tyger or the SARIS are both very sturdy options. I have three SARIS because I replaced a Venzo with another SARIS before going on a vacation with four bikes in the back of our car. I wish they were a little smaller in diameter because they are a little difficult to attach to the Yakima bike rack. The tube diameter of the three different models I've owned is all the same. I'm sure they could be made smaller in diameter while still providing a secure and stable connection between the bike and the bike rack. Overall, a good item.

There are a lot of design flaws
3/5

I can say that this product does its job, but I have a lot of issues with the design. 1. br>br> When using a bike rack, it's far too easy to accidentally press the hook release button. While I believe it is unlikely that it will be fully released, I still believe it is a poor design. 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br My Thule bike rack has issues because of the shape of the hook release. The bar bounces off the rubber secure holding pieces as a result of this issue. When driving long distances, this is a major issue. 3. br>br>4. br>br>5. br>br>6. This item will not fit a women's small bicycle frame. Smaller frames will not function properly as a result of this. The bar does not extend far enough to allow it to sit comfortably on bike racks. br>br>All things considered, I would prefer almost any other brand of this product; I usually enjoy Saris products, but this one was a huge disappointment.

The build quality is excellent, and the controls are simple to use
5/5

I'm glad I came across it. This is an unexpected find and a fantastic product: it's well-made, sturdy, and simple to use. The likelihood that the bar will support the bicycle and not come apart, as the previous generation of Saris bar appears to have done (based on online reviews), is very high. This is a book I would strongly suggest. br>I'm the proud owner of a Kuat 2 A trailer hitch with a bike rack. My Cannondale and Marin bikes fit perfectly on the rack, but my wife's Ghost bicycle did not. I can put her bike on the rack, as well as one of mine, and we can go for a ride together thanks to the Saris adapter.
