Do not know what an art knife is, but what I have found to be the best thing to use is a 3 inch piece of either a hacksaw blade or sawzall blade with the edge of the SMOOTH side facing upwards (press hard against it).
If you use a knife with a sharp edge you will have more leverage to apply the pressure. I don't think there is a solid steel bar inside any ferro rod the ones that are softer have a higher magnesium content while the hard ones contain less.
You could also use a folding knife if you only have a piece of HIGH CARBON STEEL to use as a striker. Use extreme caution, however, if you only have a folded knife. The back (spine) of my Becker bk-14 is usually where I apply pressure It is also very effective to use a piece of an old hacksaw blade! A high carbon steel product can be anything. There is a practical way for those of us without a degree in metallurgy to check if our metal is high carbon steel without taking an educational course. A bench grinder (preferably) or a test machine will show whether it is high carbon steel if it makes quite a bit of sparks when touched to the grinding wheel. Ideally a couple of old hacksaw blades welded, epoxyed, or riveted together with contour matching the ferry rod will create a lot of sparks when contacted. The more surface area you have contacting the ferry rod the more sparks you will generate. A striker has a knack for going missing when you need them most. You can trace a half circle onto the metal with the ferro rod by setting the flat end of the rod on the To cut out the half circle matching the ferro rod, you can use a dremel, drill press, metal punch, or anything you have on hand.

After scraping by with the dinky things I scraped by, I think it's about time I got what I deserved after 20 years. It hasn't been my experience to use one, but let's assume they're all the same material since they're all made of the same stuff. The size of them is out of this world. It is more comfortable to wear one smaller if you want to wear one around your neck or whatever. Using them is a lot of fun since you can really get a hold of them. It would be easy to play stickball if you wrapped tape around the end. There is a possibility of making numchucks by tying these together. I think you get the point. Lastly, if you think you are a fire building god with a metal match, you better practice. The spark is the only thing you need to worry about.
The sparks from this thing are bigger than those from The feather stick was ignited by a first scrape to remove the paint and a second scrape to remove the paint.
The perfect solution for cooking fires while on a trip was this, since I would require good fires for long periods of time. The first planned campsite I prepared was just before setting out for the day. I gathered a good amount of wood, plenty of kindling and lots of Having a fire pit and a few feet around it is something any good camper does. After first grabbing my knife and slowly scraping off the protective coating from one side until I was left with shiny fire starting material, I used it to extinguish my fire.
As I built my fire base and piled on my tinder, I ran the spine of my knife down the rod to start the fire. I hadn't anticipated how the size of the rod would influence how many sparks would be My knife was slicing through the rod as soon as I had run it down, and a huge jet of superheated sparks went out. In a few feet, everything around me went up in flames. As the realization that I was now living every camper's worst nightmare hit me, I felt a wave of panic wash over me. Suddenly, I found myself up against a forest fire. I fell to my knees and kicked dirt on the flames in an attempt to smother the fire, but that didn't work. In the trees around me, sparks from the XL Survival Fire Starter sparked a fire that kerbed into the bark, causing the trees to quickly burn. The wind swept my back, so with the flames close behind, I ran back in the direction I had come, grabbing my pack and sprinting back to where I had come. The night was already upon me and I knew it was already night. Even as the smoke choked, I desperately ran, praying I would be able to return to my car so that I could drive to safety and call for forest service air tankers, hoping to stop any further damage. In the blink of an eye, I saw flames engulfing me as I reached my car, my eyes and lungs burning from the smoke. After barely escaping to the main road, I managed to make my way back home. I was very thankful to receive two of the XL Survival Fire Starters for this purchase, so I was able to pass one on Despite its simple design and simplicity, this powerful device can destroy entire structures in seconds. Only two structures were destroyed in their test
Please be careful with this device. You don't want to set off the next fifty-grain wildfire like I did.
The few grams of ferrocerium it contains may be a bit excessive to carry with you camping, but you are getting a lot - I bought it in order to have extra supplies when I'm hunkered down While residing during Hurricane Ike, I was unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you like to see it) stuck at a girl's house I had just met, and due to her state, she was not able to leave the house. Despite our lack of preparedness, we made the best of the situation. It was difficult to cook with fire and a sustainable source of heat. Our grill was equipped with charcoal, but no lighter fluid or lighter fluid charcoal. As it happens, I did have ferrocerium rod in my pack, so I was able to improvise fires for cooking and making coffee with it. Having one of these in the home (or the 6" version) is an essential part of any serious preparer's arsenal. There isn't much you can do wrong with this for the price.
I keep an Exotac keychain on my keychain every day, so it would have to be pretty good to live up to that. It was better than I expected! There is nothing worse than a ferro rod that doesn't last! It is a heavy duty ferro rod and I envision it lasting forever. In order to find out what this rod could do, I scraped a little of the black off and used my Mora knife. I am amazed! As it wooshed, it literally threw sparks onto my tinder and made the characteristic "woosh " noise you hear on a good ferro rod. As a result, I strongly recommend this product and think it makes an excellent addition to a bug-hunting environment The bag can be a camping backpack or an outing bag.
You can still use it if it gets wet. I have a second ferro rod, and it has far superior material to the first I paid $6 more for the first version, but its surface area is much smaller. These don't even come with strikers, but after spending a while playing with them, I found that strikers weren't even the best way to start a fire. As it turned out, I used the spine of a knife and it was much more useful. I would highly recommend using it for survival. Nevertheless, I would recommend practicing this method in a home setting before you take it into the great outdoors as your only way to start a fire. It was a good decision for me to do this. I tried using a ferro rod for 20 minutes and had no luck, I watched a video for two minutes, then used a knife instead of the starter and had a fire going in just 45 seconds.
