How Our Score Is Calculated

Product Description

A WILDERNESS WORKHORSE - The Überleben Kräftig Fire Starter was designed with the idea of keeping things simple. To get the sparks flying, all you need is a solid 1/2" thick ferrocerium rod. Is it a bad thing if it appears to be overkill?
THE BEST FERRO BLEND, PERIOD — Our Snft-korr ferrocerium blend is a perfect balance of softness and strength. Ignite any fire with ease, no matter what altitude you're at or what weather you're in, even if it's wet.
HIGH-TEMPERATURE SPARKS - The ease with which a ferro rod sparks and, more importantly, the molten showers of up to 5,500F/3,000C that rain down to ensure your tinder sets ablaze when you need it most are the reasons you choose a ferro rod over standard flint.
WHEN USING LANYARD
AVAILABLE IN TWO LENGTHS - The Kräftig Fire Starter is available in two lengths: 5" and 12 inches. 20 cm (7cm or 8") 32cm in length. Both have a 1/2-inch (12 mm) thickness to them. With a thickness of 5mm, you'll get 20,000 strikes. Although it is not our lightest rod, it is our best.

Questions & Answers

I'm new to the world of emergency fire starters. Is it possible to use ferro rods instead of magnesium rods? I am a 6th grade teacher. ?

My two oldest daughters (ages 6 and 9) are both capable of starting fires with the Krftig. Both by berleben, Z14nden fire starters are now relatively easy to come by. There is a small learning curve, as with any "skill," but it is otherwise fairly simple - With a little practice and a larger ferro rod like the Krftig, you can do it. They have a little more difficulty with the berleben Leicht neck fire starter because it is so small. Rather, it's a back-up plan. However, that is a higher-level ferro rod. Anything bigger should be no problem for them! Please let us know if you have any problems.

Why is it so difficult for me to locate an 8-inch model?

Hello, John. Our Kraftig 8 is currently out of stock. Restocking will begin as soon as possible. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for your patience.

Is this a mishmetal firesteel, or is it something else entirely?

Yep. Ferrocerium is referred to by a variety of terms.

Is there any corrosion on your property?

It's been raining here off and on for the past few days, so I kept it in an outside tool box and it worked fine. Right now, there is no rust or corrosion.

A rawhide boot lace can be used to make a nice handle for your firestick
5/5

Using a strip of 1/8" wide rawhide boot lace, make a nice handle for your firestickbr>I chose the 8" model with the intention of adding a handle using only a strip of 1/8" wide rawhide boot lace. Only four and a half inches of the finished product are visible. I didn't like the feel of the raw rod in my hand, and imagined it when it was very cold, considering it's a half-inch stick that should last a long time. Materials: br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>
1. The half-inch firestick measures 8 inches long and half-inch wide.

It's very simple to use, and it comes highly recommended
5/5

The first few strikes are mostly to clear the black coating off of a section, revealing the metal beneath; the rod and striking tool don't look like much, but they're extremely effective. The sparks flew freely once we started striking metal. br>While the multitool struggled to make shavings from the fatwood (possibly due to the resin), it performed admirably on a chunk of standard firewood. Striking the ferro rod with the back of a pocket knife was just as effective, if not slightly more so, because we had a better grip. Our kids were able to get a good grip and have plenty of striking distance thanks to the 5 inch length. We're glad we didn't go with a shorter rod as amateurs. br>We bought this, as well as some fatwood, for our children (ages 11 and 12). We frequently go camping, and they enjoy helping us build the campfire; as you can see in the video, our 13-year-old was able to start a fire in just a few minutes by shaving a little fatwood and using this rod. It's worth noting that he's a non-resident of the United States. Kid who is physically active. If he can do it, there's a good chance you can do it as well. The adults were able to generate 5 times the number of sparks per strike.

It's tough and will last a long time

That's all there is to it (thank you, Stan). This thing is a beast, but it's not too big or cumbersome. Now, I have no qualms about carrying a large pocket knife or wearing a large ferro rod around my neck, such as this one. If you're the type who gets annoyed by anything that's even slightly bulky, you'll want to put this in a backpack, purse, or whatever. br>br>It produces a lot of sparks, and you'll probably never be able to use it all up. Beginning tomorrow (12-hour period), 18) In a couple of years, I'll be trekking across North America. br>br>I'm a bit of a free spirit, but it's currently 38 degrees outside, so this adventure seems a little silly, even to me. LOL. br>br>Anyway, it arrived, and I put it to the test. I doubt I'll need a replacement even if it's my only means of starting fires on this crazy quest (which will be at least twice a day, for about two years). But, as an outdoor enthusiast and someone whose inner child still enjoys striking a metal rod to create sparks, I'll be getting a few more. LOL. br>br>I have no opinion on the metal striker that is attached. I snipped the cord that connected it to the ferro rod and tossed it. That's not to say it looked shoddy or anything, but when you're planning on carrying everything you own for the next two years on your back, you start to get a little antsy. I'm a little hesitant when it comes to my weight. Opinel No. 1 is in my possession. As a result, the striker was forced to leave. LOL. br>br>It's a fantastic product of excellent quality, and I believe the price is both justified and reasonable. It was a no-brainer for me to buy this ferro rod. When I return to civilization, I'll buy one for each of my backpacks to keep bugs at bay. out- I'm the proud owner of a bag and a haversack. 🤙.

There is nothing comparable to the video
3/5

I've used ferro rods before, and while each one has a "break in" period, this one doesn't perform any better or worse than the $2-per-rod option. I've used four of them. br>The "tool" that comes with it is nearly useless, and you'll get the best results if you use a dull knife or the spine of a thicker camping/hunting knife. br>br>However, the product DOES work and will light a fire. Just not in the manner depicted in the video, and not using the provided tool. br>I'll keep this in my bag because it's convenient, but I'm not going to buy another.

Make certain that the length is correct! Excellent craftsmanship
5/5

Easy to use (you just have to get the hang of it and scrape off the outer coating), but not as pictured because I ordered the 5" instead of the 8"br>br>You'd have to be under water to not get the sparks off the 5" one, but size does matter: ) I wish I'd paid attention to the size selection on the order page. In addition, unlike the photo of the 8" one, the 5" one is a perfect cylinder.
