The battery does not have a light that indicates that it is almost dead. Your battery will start to drain when you let it run all the way down and then charge it. The battery does not like being in the heat so I can't leave it in my work truck during the day. The heat does something to the battery so it drains. It will indicate red if the battery needs to be charged and green when it is fully charged only when it is being charged
I had thought about doing the very same thing but it was not a good idea based on what I remember the small molding that divided the battery had to be removed you would risk ruining the headlamp so do yourself a favor and buy a rechargeable headlamp instead. That's what I did and it was well worth it. I've been using the FL85r for the past two years and I'm impressed with how bright the light is. It has an output of 800 lumens. I have owned several bright headlamps in my life. Unfortunately, it failed when I tried to use it the first night. Neither the primary focusing beam nor the secondary focusing beam work.
