Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use this filter with water that has tannin? Also, have you considered brackish water?

The filter, according to Sawyer, removes 99.9% of bacteria. 99.9% of all harmful bacteria and 99.9% of all harmful bacteria and 99.9% of all Protozoa account for 99.9% of all organisms. Viruses and other impurities aren't mentioned, and neither are viruses. I've sent Sawyer an email inquiring about tannin and brackish water, and I'll respond once I hear back. I don't know when that will happen, but I'm hoping it will be soon.

Is there a limit to how long this can be kept? Whether it's been used and cleaned properly, or it's brand new. ?

Sawyer claims that this filter can handle up to 100,000 gallons of water. When you notice a drop in flow, I recommend using the included syringe to back flush with potable water. I normally keep an ounce or two of 90% isopropyl alcohol on hand to sanitize the drinking tip as well as any tubes I might use when setting up different systems. br>br>After use and before long-term storage (especially if you filtered a lot of biologically questionable water), run a sanitizing solution of bleach/water (1 tbsp plain, unscented bleach to 1 gallon water) through the filter, then rinse thoroughly with potable water, shake vigorously, and allow to air dry for several days before capping and storing. Unless it is exposed to extreme temperatures, such as hot or cold, an unopened filter should have an indefinite shelf life.

How much does the entire system weigh in total? (Including the filter, tube, syringe, and pouch) It appears that the 2 oz listed refers only to the filter. ?

You are correct in that the 2 ounces are only for the filter- Sawyer promotes it in his ad. Inside the packaging, the entire unit weighs four pounds. 8 ounces. I can't take it out to weigh the items outside of the packaging because doing so would require destroying the container. I'm guessing the plastic cover weighs less than an ounce, putting the total weight of the unit at around 4 ounces.

Has the Sawyer Mini undergone End-of-Life testing in a lab to ensure that it will ACTUALLY filter 100,000 gallons of water?

The only thing I can find on the Sawyer website is the lifetime warranty, which states that if you read it, they will fix/replace the filter for life as long as you don't modify it in any way, open the housing, or run juice or drink mixes through it, they will replace it. The 100,000 gallon guarantee states that you will have it for life and will lose it before it breaks. I hope this information was helpful; you can find all the technical data sheets on their website.

The water filtration dialysis system was a no-brainer
3/5

It was a present for my son, and I bought it for him. This item includes everything you'll need to make hiking and carrying water more convenient. Water filtration via dialysis made perfect sense to me as a nurse. I got it for my son to hike the PCT in Oregon with a platypus 2 liter backpack. It was fantastic, in my opinion. It is, in fact. Except on the second day of his hike, the O ring failed to form a seal, allowing water to flow into the reservoir. broke. The problem on the mini was something that other PCT hikers had encountered. The regular Sawyer filter, it appears, does not suffer from the same issue. br>Sawyer Corporation- If you put your O rings on the mini, you'll go from 1 to 5 stars!.

Hack can be used to filter
5/5

Unless you're eaten by a bear or a pack of wolves, it keeps you alive. It's not Sawyer's fault if this happens, but at the very least you'll know you're not passing any harmful bacteria or parasites on to the critter gnawing on your bones. br>br>This is a simple hack to replace or substitute the included bag. This filter can be attached to either a 700 ML or 1 Liter SmartWater bottle. The sports cap on the 700 ML is the ideal size for pushing the outflow end of the filter into, and it's secure enough to hold the weight of a full 1 L bottle. To gravity feed, simply squeeze the air out of the outflow bottle and lean it against a tree or rock, or squeeze the inflow bottle to speed things up. When shaking out the filter, make sure the washer is covered with your finger so it doesn't fly away and get lost. A 5/16" ID x 1/2" Yellow Plastic Screw Protector (made by Hillman and available at Lowe's for $0. 50). 92 dollars for a three-pack - Model 881039, hardware section, with steel drawers containing metal bolts, washers, and other items. Hillman's name will be spelled out on them. When the Sawyer Mini Filter is stored in your pack, this will fit over the inflow nipple to prevent leakage and dirt from entering the filter. br>br>The first image shows a full 1 L bottle held together by the filter pushed into the sports cap. The second photo (sorry for the blur) shows me filling a 1L bottle after squeezing out the air. The third photo shows my finger over the washer as I shake out the filter so it doesn't fall out, and the fourth photo shows the Hillman cap and package.

This isn't the right filter for you
3/5

A good filter is a must-have item for any avid backpacker. I've used the same type and brand of water filter for the past 30 years of backpacking. A friend finally persuaded me to buy the Sawyer mini just to try it out (lighter, no pump, etc. ), and I can't tell you how much I regret it. br>With the exception of the first night, when I thought I'd try out the Sawyer mini, we used our regular pump filter for the entire trip. Other reviewers have stated that the ease of use depicted in the instructions is nothing like the actual functionality of the product; it was a pain to keep the o-rings in place. without losing the ring or washer Filling is nearly impossible because the bag creates a vacuum as soon as it is submerged in water. The best part is that I only had to fill my canteen once. It took an eternity to complete), and no one else in our group used it. The bad news is that I now have giardia and am being treated for it. I followed all of the instructions to the letter, but this filter was so ineffective that I could have drank straight from the river. And now that the return window has passed, I won't even get a refund for the two filters I bought (let alone the thousands of dollars in medical bills and lost wages). br>If you're looking for a good filter to protect you from bacteria, parasites, and other harmful organisms, keep looking because this isn't it!.

Tiresome; Instead, opt for Squeeze
3/5

When I was thirsty and just wanted to chug full mouthfuls, sucking water through this small tube became so tedious that after two weeks on the Pacific Crest Trail, I began to envy those who had the Squeeze and other filters. br>br>Also, the cap is easily broken or lost; I lost one cap and two snapped off, and I couldn't find anywhere to buy just the caps without having to replace the entire filter. br>br>On elinatravels. com, I wrote a bit more about my hike. com.

and, most importantly, a simple method of water filtration Look no further if you're looking for a water filter that's small, light, compact, and most importantly, simple
5/5

Sawyer produces a fantastic unit at a reasonable price. br>br>I purchased this filter a few months ago to add to a survival/camping pack, and I've filtered about 40 liters of water through it since then. This filter transforms any water, from tainted garden hose water to murky lake water, into crystal clear, crisp-tasting drinking water. I was sceptical at first, to be sure. Who'd have guessed that a small, inexpensive filter could transform brown, contaminated water into clean, perfectly safe water? But have no fear: this filter is a force to be reckoned with, and it continues to outperform the competition. br>br>One tip I have is to get a Platypus Plastic 2L Water Bag (link below) for easier and more bulk filtration. It costs less than $10 and works in the same way as the filter bottle, except it can filter 70 oz instead of 16 oz. I also purchased a grommet kit from a local craft store and inserted two grommets in the bag's seam corner. After that, I ran a one-foot stretch of para- I was able to hang the bottle from a tree branch or any other convenient location by threading a cord through the grommets. This way, you can focus on your camp chores while gravity takes care of the rest. In less than 10 minutes, I was able to filter 2 liters of water. br>br>A word of warning: Sawyer claims that this filter can filter 1,000,000 gallons of water (though you're more likely to lose the filter before that), but cleaning is essential to extending the life and quality of your filter and the water it filters. I recommend flushing the filter with clean water after each filtration session, using the syringe he provided. Don't be afraid to squirt a lot of water in there; you'll only be assisting your filter. br>br>Overall, this filter was an excellent purchase. I don't believe there is a better filter on the market, especially for under $100!
