Is it accurate to say that this dromedary bag fits this? Once I buy the kit, a maintenance kit, and the ceramic element, is there anything else that I need to buy in order ?

The top is the same size to match the pump, and the pump will fit the msr bags and nalgene steel bottle (1778 1002). It can also be used with the stove or fire.

How long does it take to dry the filter before it can be stored? - (Not If you are on a multi-year plan for storage, you should use it for daily use Can you take me on a hike today)?

As long as it's kept dry for a few days, there will be no problem. The longer the filtration system is in use, the less time it has to absorb mold or other fungi. It is however recommended that you thoroughly clean the system according to msr specific instructions at the time of

Is there a place where you can purchase gaskets and filters, hoses, etc., etc.?

This is a 3/16" ID (inner diameter) and 5/16" O.D. (outer diameter) food-grade hose. Tubes made of silicone that are of high grade. There are several brands that make Veno Technoex tubing, which can be found on Amazon, Ebay, or online. Venair makes it and it is a drop in replacement that is equivalent to, US Plastics Corp., Tygon, and SILCON are some of the other brands. Its inner surfaces are also supposed to be smoother. 1 dollar is the average. Feet cost $30. This item can be ordered through McMaster-Carr I found it locally at Canal Rubber in New York City, so in my case it was Carr's. The best approach would be to call some brick and mortar commercial plumbing supply stores and ask before swimming around the web after all, this product is commonly used in food service and brick and mortar stores are likely to cut a 10' length for you It is NOT a good idea to use vinyl tubing or another type of tubing that is not FDA approved food grade silicone.

Don't get ripped off! Know what you're getting! My six week hiking trip took me to the mountains
3/5

I bought this to prepare for that hike. When the water first came into the aquarium it wasn't too polluted * However, the unit clogs quite often. You have to scrub the ceramic unit with a green scrub pad that comes with the unit. The pump will restart and work again, but after a few liters of water, it will slow down again. requires a significant amount of physical effort to operate. While not difficult, if you're taking two people on a backpacking trip and are supplying them with water, you're going to get a workout from your arms and As a result of the two weeks of backpacking, I shipped the filter back to myself and used chemical tablets (also MSR) for the rest of the As far as I am concerned, if I had this as a 2 If it were a 3-day backpacking trip, it would be fine, but if it were a long distance trip, it would get stale It's important to note that people who have broken their filters here are doing things incorrectly. It is crucial to clean the pump if it is too hard to pump the water. Otherwise, it will break. At no time did I ever consider it could be broken by accident.

I recently bought this filter for a backpacking trip in Rocky Mountain National Park
3/5

I found it to be indispensable, but with issues. I previously worked with this model on previous trips, so I knew the quality of the item was pretty good. Ceramic filters offer a host of benefits over traditional ones for example, they can be cleaned easily This is a cartridge that is done and dusted. It has had a few shortcomings, even though I have used the filter every time and have gotten clean, drinkable water every time. There are a number of problems with this filter. The biggest is that it builds up pressure inside the filter chamber, causing the water pump to run very slowly. a Katadyn Hiker as a comparison, the Katadyn was typically squeezing out four Nalgenes per two the MSR squeezed out, in a river that was virtually sediment-free. With upwards of eighty dollars at stake, I wish the pressure weren't as much of a problem. While I was a bit patient, I was still able to utilize my MSR just fine, and I honestly don't mind taking the time to use it. This is not a filter for you if you prefer filtering as quickly as possible rather than taking time to stop and smell the roses. Although, the lack of the need to guess whether my filter cartridge will clog up is this filter's saving grace, as I can clean it instead of hoping it won't do so in the backcountry.

It works at home and on the trail, but not at home- This would be useful when you need it - After reading the reviews, I decided to commit to the MSR filter
3/5

Although there were a few accounts of problems on the trail, most reviews were positive. Mine worked when I first tried it at home, then worked for a few hours when I first attempted it at Kidder Lake There was no sediment in the water It would take my friend 3 liters of blood with his Katadyn pump in the time it took me to do one quarter A pressure buildup on the pump causes the gasket to blow. Even when we cleaned per the instructions, we couldn't get it to work. It was a good thing we had a spare filter. My first action after I returned home was to take a shower, followed by returning It appears that other reviews indicate this has been a problem in the past. If you plan on hiking in the backcountry, take care.

It can be used in emergencies and at campsites
5/5

As a complement to my backpacking gear, I bought it. While in the past I used to carry water on my weekend adventures, as I am aging I am becoming more concerned with weight. Following the manufacturer's recommendation to reduce sediment getting into the filtration system, I conducted an experiment simulating the water conditions you may find in the Southern states (Florida is my home state). We were able to pump the water into the system with no problems by using a coffee paper filter for the intake part. The first filtration left us with some colored but smelly water. Using a second filtering process, the water is now much clearer and doesn't smell as bad. As soon as I drank the water from the second glass, it lacked any particular taste and was completely safe to drink. As a result, I believe the system failed to fulfill its purpose, but for my peace of mind I am going to use a second filtration or purification system such as tablets or a sawyer personal use small purification system.

This book is the best I've ever read! My research into filtration systems lasted almost a month before I decided to use the MSR miniworksTM
5/5

Although I figured I could just get one from Cabela's or REI, both stores had run out of this particular product. However, there still remained a good supply of a variety of other MSR and Katadyn filter systems. Taking this as a sign, I ordered it from Amazon. I am glad I did I see no reason to pass it up. Here's what you need to know. As an example of what was happening in camp This filter is very simple, has a good output, and is very straightforward to use. As a percentage This is the pump to pressure Even though you pump water through the system every minute, it does not feel like you are doing more work than you should, particularly since every pump is worth about one gulp of nasty water you will not be forced to drink afterward. It may be necessary to unscrew the filter housing and to give the element a light scrub if the output has been diminished. I think we had a couple dozen Nalgene bottles worth) without noticing the filter was dirty. The tannin-containing compound It is reputed that loaded water is the worst culprit for plugging these ceramic filters, so if you have cleaner water sources at your site than we do, it should not cause any problems. There should be a longer time frame between cleaning sessions. The water came out crystal clear There is almost no taste at all to it. Tea didn't taste like Dasani bottled water, and it certainly didn't taste like Dasani bottled water. It doesn't matter what color the lake water is I'm neutral to the issue. The most important thing was that it tasted CLEAN and nobody got sick from it. In addition, both the MSR Miniworks and MSR Miniworks air filters claim that they filter anything except viruses with no additions. From a U. S. tourist, you are likely to contract some form of waterborne disease. There is a lake or stream (think of Polio, Hep-B SARS, A, and a few others, for which you are already vaccinated), is much higher than getting ill You may still boil your clear, clean water if you insist on getting rid of it It is always a good idea to taste the water. The following are the results of camp There is very little maintenance required for this filter. Four major components make up the unit, and wrist pins on the pump assembly lock into place in seconds You need to squeeze the squeezer. Types with both a push and a pull. It is literally possible to do the entire process of disassembling and cleaning the filter in about five minutes, including the sterilization of it. When you reassemble the unit, you can simply grease it up with a couple dabs of silicone grease or chapstick. Adding to your bonus is the following While you may think that $80 is a lot to spend on a water filter, the MSR miniworks pays for itself tenfold. Everyone in our backpacking party had to carry their own water on the entire trip before purchasing a water filtration system. Then we took into account what we needed for hydration and cooking each day as well as a bit more just in case, and we strictly followed this plan. With our party, we were able to drop approximately 15 pounds carried, per person, due to the filter! Before, we had enough water, but never enough to satisfy our thirst. After the filter, we had enough water to truly quench one's thirst. The other benefit was that we didn't have to pack a bunch of empty water bottles. There is enough water in the filter to support 4 people, so we can drink as much water (Read Cody Lundin's "98" about how hydration is so important to the body's systems. By the time you finish the "6 Degrees" book, you will know more about the topic than you ever thought possible), shelling out $80 to have clean, safe water on-site There is a cost to water demand, but it's small compared to the cost of getting water. * Tip * Please note *br* Use a coffee filter over the hose inlet and secure it with double-sided tape, a rubber band, or fishing line. This will keep your MSR filter pump working for longer without clogging or leaking. It is important to clean the elements frequently. When you scrub the element, you are removing some of the overall diameter of the element. Whenever it gets too thin, you have to get a new one. Cleaning your filters fewer times can extend your filter life and let you keep more money. An element of the filter costs It costs about three to four cents to buy a coffee filter. I agree - Make sure you carry a spare filter element with you when going on an extended trip or if you are going to be reliant on this filter to provide your drinking water when What it means After hiking back to your vehicle, you drive like a madman to the nearest 7-Eleven I don't think it's a good idea to go to 11 before you go into a coma from dehydration! Ceramic elements are fragile, finding out at a bad time and being left without a spare will be a very bad situation. When you spend the money for the filter and others in your party also use it, ask them to spend the $40 on a spare element on your behalf. The only way to be fair is to be transparent. Is that correct? I agree - A NALGENE BOTTLE SHOULD BE USED WITH THIS UNIT (or another corresponding bottle that will fit into When you pump, you are creating a very violent motion, which is far too violent for precision - If the output stream is being aimed at a bucket, then it can be aimed into any loose container. It is also possible to attach a second length of rubber hose to the outlet and run that to the container, but we have yet to try this. It seemed to be the simple solution to use the Nalgene bottle with a filter and we filled our other containers from this one. [Update on product use] We did a 4-mile run as a party of 3 The Grand Canyon is an excellent place to hike in the backcountry The Tanner Trail) during this There is definitely no tourist trail on this route, and the first 2000-year-old will be the last It isn't a very long trail at all at 3000 feet in elevation. It is noted that the only water source along the entire route is located at the bottom of the canyon, near As we made camp, we found pits of water trapped in depressions of the rocks near the place where we made water, and we pumped water from these pits with the help of The water that came out of the filter was clean and refreshing, even if I can't imagine what was in those pools of water. As we hiked out, we noted the larger pools of water, which enabled us to lighten our loads for the hike out and to top off our water tanks at the pools Whenever we needed it, we were able to turn it off.
