Although there were a few accounts of problems on the trail, most reviews were positive. As a complement to my backpacking gear, I bought it. While in the past I used to carry water on my weekend adventures, as I am aging I am becoming more concerned with weight. Following the manufacturer's recommendation to reduce sediment getting into the filtration system, I conducted an experiment simulating the water conditions you may find in the Southern states (Florida is my home state). We were able to pump the water into the system with no problems by using a coffee paper filter for the intake part. The first filtration left us with some colored but smelly water. Using a second filtering process, the water is now much clearer and doesn't smell as bad. As soon as I drank the water from the second glass, it lacked any particular taste and was completely safe to drink. As a result, I believe the system failed to fulfill its purpose, but for my peace of mind I am going to use a second filtration or purification system such as tablets or a sawyer personal use small purification system.
