Questions & Answers

Are there any filters included with the pump when you purchase it? They are sold separately, or are they offered together?

Besides the filter and pump, it has a storage tank. It is possible, however, that you will have to replace it at some point.

Is there a difference between the Vario and this?

are quite a few differences between the two. These are both things that I have used. Although the vario has more moving parts, it will pump two times as fast as the hiker pro. The hiker pro is simpler and therefore less likely to break.

What are the dimensions of a Nalgene bottle that fits ?

It can be filled with water, but it cannot be screwed onto the Nalgene Filtered through the system and filled with a small hose, what ever you want it to be can be filled. It is possible to buy bottles with filters that screw right onto them. However, if you hike where there is not much water supply, it is better to bring this one. As soon as we find water, we fill up our water bladders and two Nalgene bottles. As well as being very lightweight, it saves on power consumption.

Is there a limit on the amount of gallons each filter can handle?

A Katadyn user manual states that the filter cartridge in the Hiker Pro will last up to 1150 liters or around 300 gallons (depending on the quality of the water).

Filter that is not reliable
3/5

In the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, this product was used for one week and assembled properly. Filtered water was pumped over the shattered housing in the picture, which resulted in visible debris. By day five, it had become so difficult to pump that the shattered housing broke as seen by the photo below. Thanks to other treatment options available to us, our group was able to treat water. This is not a filter that I would ever recommend to anyone and I cannot return it to Amazon because the return window has already.

Upon returning home from two backpacking trips, it has no use
3/5

This was expensive, but after one trip, the second time was so difficult to pump that I would almost rather go without water than try to find the energy to continue So that people could rest between pumps, we had to move the pump from person to person. This was a waste of money and I will never use this type of pump It would be great if I could get a new pump from Katadyn. Exactly the same pump was purchased by my friend, and he has been experiencing the.

This unit has been proven to be fast, convenient, and effective
4/5

The price of the filters is high, and the filters are Hiking the Hiker Pro for the second time Two people hiked about 100 trail days pumping for the last one, so 300-400 trail days for the last one There are 400 gallons in this case. At some point, the valve that lifts water into the filter felt there was too much weight on it (the hose was hanging below a log when the hose was fully extended). I'm taking away a star from this review simply because there was no warning of pending failure. Since I'd already replaced the filter element (for a cost of about 75 percent of the installation and shipping of the whole filter) I thought I should get another one because I had enough left to last another 100 days or so. It is acceptable to weigh more than the recommended amount. This creates a clean water filtration system that lasts a long time for me, because pre-filtering keeps most of the crud out of the mountain water I typically filter. This pack packs well, vents before packing, and drains quickly and simply. This provides easy access to water in hard-to-reach areas in just a few minutes. For two 1 liter bottles and a gallon water canteen for camp, it only takes a few minutes. There are too many things I move too quickly to rely on any gravity system, and in the end it's just a matter of hair after all. It doesn't matter if you pack them, as long as you use them. For me, this filter is easy, and when it is paired with bottles that don't tip over, it makes a great filter system. Those are the things that matter. When it comes to items essential for trail life, I don't think about how many ounces they are. There are pretty simple ways to service the pump shaft and the filter - just take a screwdriver to them. The pump will run smoothly if I keep it lubricated. None of that had anything to do with the failure of the last unit. Assuming that it was just a flapper valve that blew out, you cannot fix that deep inside the plumbing between the Here are photos of the filter through the clear plastic covering the unit While I'm not sure what a new model adds over the previous model, it still can't hurt to see what different settings apply The water still has some Still, the price of the filter cartridge needs to come down at least a little bit before it gets a 5 star rating. There are two plastic ends that have pleated fiber material between them The filter housing is comparatively cheaper than the rest of the filter, so what makes it such an expensive part to make? These filters are in general priced too high for the type of service they provide. There is no mistaking that this is a recreation product. Someday I hope to find a filter that works like this one, but that does not require the extra markup associated with recreational equipment.

Carbon continues to leak
3/5

I have been experiencing leaks in my carbon filter since the first time I used For quite a while now I have tried pumping it but the pain doesn't seem to improve. My opinion of this product is that it is damaged.

It's a lifesaver! I am amazed! On a recent hike, I used this pump for the first time
5/5

I've never used a pump/filter before, so I was somewhat skeptical about its efficiency and safety. However, I brought this pump with me out of a sense of precaution. It couldn't have been a better day for me! During one of the exercises, our group was running low on water and was forced to refill many water bladders at once. The only one with a pump was sent to get water, which meant I was one of the few sent. There was also another member of our group that claimed to have a pump of the same size and In contrast, I found that after getting to the stream and filling the Nalgene bottles we had brought with us, I was able to pump a maximum of 3 Liters of potable water for every 1 Liter of water from a pump on one side of the stream. In spite of its low weight and small size, this is a highly effective and efficient pump. If it isn't there, I will not hike! I am reminding you that pump 2 is due soon You should run 3 litres of water through the filter (before you leave home) to eliminate the charcoal residue before you use it to fill your bottles.

The disposable filter would be awesome to use over a long weekend
3/5

I don't know how much longer this can go on. The device is lightweight, easy to use, and works flawlessly for 3 hours The trip is for two backpackers and lasts four days. When we reached the end of our trip, it was getting increasingly difficult for us Ten years is what we're talking about Those twelve gallons of water filter out from a mountain creek are crisp and clear. As best as I could, I disassembled and cleaned the filter between trips. The third 3-D model is on its way On a one-day backpacking trip with two people, the filter functioned fine until about one gallon of water had been consumed and then became extremely difficult to use. The pump handle actually broke because it was so poorly made Under the pressure of trying to pump it, it snapped. In all seriousness- The pump broke! This pump was rated for 1500 gallons of water, but plugged up and failed after less than 20 gallons of water. In the event the handle had not broken, the replacement filter would've cost $35-$40 This represents 40 per cent. Based on my calculations, that would be about $2 a gallon. The shipping cost for replacing the handle is $20. It's worth it to spend $270 on the Pocket filter if you're a serious back country hiker or hunter. This metal water filter has a ceramic filter that can be cleaned and is rated for 13000 gallons. That comes to about $0. 02 in my calculations A lot easier to use and a whole lot more reliable than $0. 02. Yes, it weighs 7 ounces more than the Hiker Pro, but since comfort and ease of use are more important to me than weight, I will take it. You have every day off of the year off. It's your call.

Two uses of the filter cartridge in High Uintas caused the cartridge to be clogged and unusable
3/5

My backpacking trip was a success thanks to this product I purchased last week. There was an issue with the filter cartridge after just It costs over $30 to replace a cartridge! The whole thing is a rip-off. Stream water that I filtered was pretty clean, since it came from a running stream. In the first two uses, the device worked flawlessly, but after the third use it became clogged, making it almost impossible to pump. I was lucky enough to find a system in another member of our group that I was able to use for the remainder I will note We also had another person with the Katadyn Hiker, and his was clogged as well. Three other people had used a Katadyn Hiker and they both were very satisfied with it, and they plan on using it on more As a result, we were only able to use one of three Katadyn filter systems. I guess if you like those odds, you should go for the purchase.
