Questions & Answers

What can I do if I need replacement flasks?

There are separate flasks compatible with the Hydropak Seeker available for purchase. The 2L size was more than enough for me.

Is swishing water inside the filter a good way to clean it? What good would this do, then? It would just redistribute the bad stuff around, instead of actually removing it from ?

As the debris is agitated from the filter, it is loosen. Backflowing a Sawyer is the same thing. There is more space for the Katadyn filter to move, allowing particles to fall through more freely. This is a delicate piece of equipment, so it should only be used as a back up on an extended trip.

We will be going overseas and will not have access to tap water there. Is it safe to drink the water from this dispenser when it is filled from the tap?

Yes, I would say. The night before, I like to add a chorine tablet to a liter of tap water so that I always have a full liter of purified water. My understanding is that the Katadyn tube holds less than half a

The filter is in place, so can you use purifying tablets or drops in the bottle?

Why would you do that? By using this filter/bottle, you are able to purify water to 0 parts per billion. The smallest unit of measurement is 1 micron. Aside from cysts, protozoa, and bacteria, this also kills all their eggs.

Initially, I was very excited about this filter
3/5

I have to tell you though, after reading the description, I became highly disappointed. There was no comparison in terms of its portability and convenience, as well as its flow rate. That was at least the case during the first outing. Soon after, things took a sharp turn for the worse. I took it home and cleaned it properly and stored it after the first weekend. I then took it out for a second time a few weeks later. When disaster struck, that's when it started. During a hiking trip in Colorado's mountains, I filled it with clear mountain stream water. A few seconds before I started filtering I boasted to my son about the flow rate being the best that I had Just barely dribbling water came out of the bottle as I squeezed. After cleaning it several weeks ago, I thought perhaps I needed to clean it (though, I'd just done so recently), so I cleaned it using Katadyn's suggested method. Only a trickle is coming in. Due to the rupturing issues I had heard about, I continued to roll the bags gently and gently. It turned out that the bag ruptured at the neck within 10 ounces and could not be used as is. The good news is that I brought along some Aquamira devices to use for If I had not gotten off the trail, I would have had to return to civilization. Sadly, I am extremely dissatisfied with this It is one of my favorite brands and I own several products from them. But I am not likely to buy this once again unless Katadyn makes significant improvements. Make sure you are buying from a reputable seller. read my other reviews, you will find that I rarely mention anything negative about a product. However, I felt the need to share my mistake to help others avoid making the same mistake I did.

It is impossible to open the bottle
3/5

It is an awesome filter The fastest and easiest way possible This is an easy-to-use program. Sadly, after 4 days of light hiking (day hikes) and other activities, the battery failed here. I never got the bottle to work after 5 days of frequent usage (on a backpacking trip). I do not recall the bottle having been abused A normal use of it resulted in a failure. In spite of this, I had a couple of backup methods of water treatment available to me. I suggest that you make the same choice if you choose to use the Katadyn BeFree.

As soon as I saw the flask split, I fell in love
3/5

The lesson is Make sure you have all of the proper equipment before you go! The summer of 2017 was the time when I purchased this. Due to my career and my recreational activities, I was thrilled to be able to bring the Be Free wherever I go On my longer treks, I look for a source of water. Before I took it on vacation to Utah, I had tried drinking water from streams about five to six times over the course of about a year and a half. At the time of the flask failure, I was running in the wilderness in temperatures of 85 degrees Fahrenheit (and out of water). We could not safely drink the field water due to a split rubber near the top (it seems this is not an uncommon failure). After spending a night out with my sweetheart, we came out with nothing worse than sticky mouths and thirst. I reached out to Katadyn and the support team was fantastic. I would definitely consider trying another product from Katadyn because of this reason. A quick update The package that Katadyn sent to me contained a filter for a product I don't own, even though Katadyn said they would replace my flask. Since notifying them of the error, I have yet to hear back from them. My hope for an advance may be dashed if they don't come through for me. I have switched to Life Straw for the time being.

This is a good filter There is something wrong with that bag
3/5

It is well known among many reviewers that the bag/bottle that came with the filter failed about two times after the first use (see photo). My care less handling of the squeeze filter was because I was familiar with it and knew not to squeeze too hard that I would break the bag. However, the bag is made poorly, and I'm not a big fan of it. I could not just replace the bag like you can with other squeeze filters due to the odd sized opening of the filter. I was fortunate enough to be hiking with a Sawyer filter on the trip, so I did not have to cut it short. I intend to contact Katadyn's customer service and will update this post once I hear back. There is so much I would love about this product, but it needs a reliable bag to function properly. A quick update Within 24 hours of my post, Katadyn responded and told me that the bag would be replaced. They didn't apologize or explain anything. They just said a new bag would be gladly mailed to me. By upgrading from 1 to 3, I am now rated In my opinion, I would have purchased the filter without the bag and a bag with a 42mm connection if I could back up time. There is only one company that makes them Hydropak.

Expenses are high and the buildings are It's rare that I post reviews, but I feel that this is something other hikers should know During my trips, I use a range of water filtration systems - It will depend on the time of year and the location if Aquamira drops, msr bags, or SWR squares are used
3/5

I purchased this for my kids and me for light, fast hikes. My trip to Mount Hood was a great experience. Yesterday, I went hooding with my son, 12-years-old, and we ended up drinking water straight from the stream because after all that effort, it failed. When I went to purify, all I got were some slow drips, and as the pressure was increased, the bag started leaking pinhole size holes. So far I have been able to use it on only 3 occasions The pristine water of high alpine areas makes for a great day trip. The item I wanted to like was not what I expected, but I won't repurchase it. The overall result is that it is overpriced and poorly built.

Using this ultralight filter is so much easier than using the other one
5/5

In recent years, I used the Sawyer Mini on my backpacking trips (as surveys show that most ultralight backpackers still do, so it would seem the Mini has an edge at the moment) but this one appealed to me because of After using it for just a few minutes, I happily gave the Sawyer mini to my friend. The pot is so easy to use, it has a great flow rate, and is easy to fill right My car bottle going to the trailhead is just as nice. The bottle and mouth feel like quality materials, so well that I use it as my car bottle when I'm on the trail too. In contrast to the mini, this setup would make it incredibly hard to forget a piece (or even the instructions). I handed it over to my other camping buddies, who all want it as well.

Only 4 attempts were made before it failed
3/5

The past two years I have only used this product 3 or 4 times, and I threw it away recently. That disappointed me so much. As far as the design concept is concerned, I liked how you could pack it and carry it with you wherever you go. During my hiking trip, I used it only three or four times. It was then cleaned and placed in my closet according to the instructions. On a recent hike, I took the item with me and had no luck getting water out of it when I tried to use it. The day was really hot and I only had one bottle of water in my bag. A crucial moment came and went and it didn't In my attempt to figure it out, it appears that either the filter or the membrane meshes became stuck together and are preventing the water from flowing. Thousands of gallons of water are supposed to be able to be stored in it. My search for an alternative product at this time is on.
