Rhino Rack Fixed J Style Kayak Carrier, Black, Medium (S510)

As a previous owner of a Yakima, I have a preference for the design. I found them to be a bit stiffer and easy to use compared to the previous model. They are the best option I could find because the big brands couldn't provide a good system for my Grand Cherokee, so I chose the aero shaped Rhino Rack cross bars to which they In addition to performing their functions, they also look good from the outside. The straps have to be wrapped around the bases a little more intricately. YAKIMA rack bases are rounder and larger than those from other manufacturers. It pretty much requires you to wrap the strap around the lower mounting points. So either you fold the strap over length-wise at those sections, or you wrap it flatly over the mounts, which I think is likely to lead to premature wear on the straps.

It is made of sturdy materials and seems like it will last for a long time. That alone consists of why it gets two instead of one star. Apparently, this part of the design did not work for me, and the metal threaded part of the design actually moved out of the opening. In addition, it is practically impossible to make any repair since I am unable to access the tops of the bolts because of the rubber top pad. Despite the poor design, it could be a great product with a better design.

Anyway, I ordered one thinking maybe it would be enough. Based on the previous review, I could tell that the engineering was inadequate. Despite my doubts, I placed the order anyway, thinking it would be an isolated case. In fact, that review was accurate. When you tighten the bottom nut, it loosens the top nut. Moreover, the rubber top piece gets destroyed when it is attempted to be removed. It is not a kayak carrier I would purchase again!.

I mounted it on a rhino rack perfectly. I can easily carry my kayaks without having to worry.
